Industrial Facilities Search for Cheap Fuel

Industrial facilities such as cement, lime and thermal power plants started to search for cheap fuel. Facilities using fossil fuels in their production processes have turned to Waste Derived Fuel (ATY), which is 80 percent cheaper and environmentally friendly than coal. According to İSTAÇ data, ATY demand has increased 5 times in the last year.

Fossil fuel costs have been rising in recent years. This situation has directed the facilities that need fossil fuels such as natural gas, lignite and coal to alternative fuels for production. Waste Derived Fuel (ATY), which is preferred because it is cheaper; It consists of wastes such as paper-cardboard, rubber, plastic and textile, which are not economical to recycle. İSTAÇ, the subsidiary company of İBB, which provides RDF to production facilities, announced that there was a 5-fold increase in RDF demand due to the expensiveness of fossil fuels.

WE PRODUCE 24 THOUSAND TONS OF ALTERNATIVE FUEL

Eyyup Demirhan, Deputy General Manager of İSTAÇ Field Services, explained that they produce alternative fuel at Eyüpsultan Kemerburgaz Waste-Derived Fuel (ATY) Facility. Eyyup Demirhan gave the following information about the facility in question: “Fossil fuels such as coal, lignite and natural gas are used to meet the energy needs in cement, lime production facilities and thermal power plants. However, the increase in the costs of fossil fuels in recent years has led these enterprises to alternative fuels. To the ATY facility, which is operated within the body of our Industrial Waste Directorate, material recycling is not economical but has calorific value; paper-cardboard, rubber, plastic, textile etc. We accept industrial waste. As a result of the processing of wastes in our ATY Facility, they are sent to cement factories as alternative fuels with an average calorific value of 4.500-5.000 kcal/kg, and a chlorine and sulfur value of less than one percent. Thus, the need for fossil fuels to be needed by the factories is reduced, thus contributing to the country's economy.”

80 PERCENT CHEAP

Explaining the benefits of alternative fuels, Eyyup Demirhan emphasized that these fuels, which can be substituted for fossil fuels such as coal, are 80 percent more economically cost effective, and also mentioned that alternative fuels are cheaper and more environmentally friendly.

Demirhan stated that when alternative fuels are used, approximately 3,5 times less emissions are released into the atmosphere and that this situation also reduces the operating costs of the facilities.

Pointing out that the quality of the alternative fuel produced depends on the content of the waste, Demirhan said, “Moreover, by producing RDF from these wastes, which generally have a high volume ratio, we prevent them from being mixed with domestic wastes. Thus, the usage times of our sanitary landfills increase and we save on operating costs.”
