Steps Turned for Autism, Pedals for Awareness in Capital

Ankara City Council (AKK) organized a walking and cycling event within the scope of 'Autism Awareness Month' in cooperation with Ankara Metropolitan Municipality and Autism Foundation. AKK Executive Board Chairman Halil İbrahim Yılmaz, who attended the event, said, “We came together to declare autism awareness, the fact that one out of every four people has autism.”

Ankara City Council (AKK) continues to cooperate with Ankara Metropolitan Municipality and Non-Governmental Organizations in projects to increase social awareness.

AKK organized an awareness event with the Autism Foundation on children with autism living in the capital at the end of the week with the slogan "We Walk and Cycling" at Lake Eymir.

YILMAZ: “4 IN 1 PEOPLE IS WITH AUTISM”

AKK Executive Board Chairman Halil İbrahim Yılmaz, who attended the event with many participants from AKK Cycling Council, Disabled Council, Education Working Group, Autism Foundation METU Lodos Community, said, “Ankara is the city of beginnings and the capital of awareness. Ankara has declared its awareness on every issue in every aspect. After declaring that it is the capital of awareness with 95 people at the EKO Climate Summit, we came together with our Cycling Council and Autism Foundation to announce the fact that one out of every four people has autism. We are here to show this awareness to the people of Ankara and all our citizens with the beautiful photograph of Eymir Lake at the beginning of spring.”

Hülya Saygı, Secretary General of the Autism Foundation, pointed out the importance of the support of local governments in social awareness and said, “We are together with Ankara City Council to raise awareness of autism. We want to be able to tell everyone what autism is, even a little bit. Unless it is known, our children are really discriminated against. That's why awareness activities are very important and I would like to thank our Municipality, City Council and other components for participating in such a study.”

AKK Disabled Council said that they had the opportunity to do sports both by hiking and cycling in the awareness event. SözcüOn the other hand, Ersan Petekkaya expressed his thoughts with these words:

“As AKK Disabled Council, we have done a lot of work. We are here with all our components, especially the Cycling Council, Education Working Group, Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, to announce autism awareness to all Ankara and all of Turkey and to draw attention to this issue this spring. Thank you everyone for your participation.”
