The solid waste problem of Bakırçay Basin in the north of the city is solved with this facility. In the closed system and environmentally friendly facility that does not cause odor, the garbage that citizens put in front of their doors in Bergama, Dikili, Kınık and Aliağa districts will turn into raw materials in industry, fertilizers in agriculture and electricity. From the solid wastes separated at the facility, approximately 10 megawatts of electrical energy will be produced per hour, equivalent to the electricity needs of 58 thousand households per month. The facility will also produce 100 tons of fertilizer per day. The fertilizer will be used in agricultural areas and in the landscaping of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality.
How does the system work?
There are mechanical separation, biomethanization units, compost production, electrical energy production units and a modern laboratory in the facility, which was established as a completely closed facility. Waste coming to the facility will be separated, packaging waste will be used as raw material in the recycling industry, energy and fertilizer will be produced from organic wastes.
Number of facilities increased to three
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has started to generate electrical energy from the wastes stored since November 2019 at the Harmandalı Regular Solid Waste Storage Facility in Çiğli, within the scope of the "Integrated Solid Waste Management System" studies. With the Biogas Facility established here, approximately 166 million cubic meters of methane gas was disposed of annually and 323 million kilowatt hours of electrical energy was generated. This amount corresponds to the energy use of 190 thousand households. As part of the efforts to transform the landfill into an urban forest, 87 decares of land has been afforested. Methane gas was converted into electrical energy in 3 integrated solid waste management facilities, including Ödemiş and Bergama, and electricity was produced in 2021 to meet the monthly average needs of 261 households.
