Ankara Metropolitan Municipality has started “Cherry Production Techniques Training” for domestic producers who want to grow sour cherries in the Capital. Continuing its rural development move, the Metropolitan Municipality also hosted the first theoretical and practical training on sour cherry cultivation held at Çubuk Family Life Center within the scope of the 'Farmer Training Program' in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Ankara Metropolitan Municipality continues to implement projects that encourage production by supporting domestic producers in the capital city, both economically and in terms of education.

The Rural Services Department, in partnership with the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) Project, in cooperation with the DKM (Nature Conservation Center) carried out the first of the "Cherry Production Techniques Training" within the scope of the "Strengthening Urban Agriculture and Rural Life Around Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Project" at Çubuk Family Life Center. .

EXAMPLE PROJECTS IN AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

Rural Services Department, which has signed an exemplary project by providing training support to producers who want to cultivate more conscious sour cherries in the capital, aims to expand the techniques of modern agriculture and to enrich agricultural production.

FIRST EDUCATION IS AT ÇUBUK, THE CENTER OF CHERRY PRODUCTION

Rural Services Department Head Ahmet Mekin Tüzün stated that they wanted to carry out the first training in Çubuk, one of the districts considered the center of cherry production in Ankara, and that the trainings made a great contribution to the quality of the products produced in Ankara.

“Within the scope of the project we carried out with FAO, we selected 5 critical products related to our province. One of these products is sour cherry. We provided training to our cherry producers on pruning, spraying, fertilization and harvesting techniques together with our university instructors. Our aim is to increase product quality and ensure that they are sold at a better value in the market. At the same time, we are working on improving the structures of cooperatives established for products and making them more effective. We will carry out a separate project not only for training but also for the evaluation of products. As ABB, we are conducting this project for the first time with the grant we received from FAO.”

GOAL: EFFICIENT AND QUALITY CHERRY PRODUCTION FROM A TO Z

Explaining the details of sour cherry production from A to Z to local producers, Ankara University Faculty of Agriculture Department of Horticulture Lecturer Prof.Dr. Nurdan Tutan Güneş answered the frequently asked questions one by one.

For a more conscious production, local producers participating in the training in Çubuk Ağılcık Neighborhood, where sour cherry trees are concentrated; The students were informed about rootstocks and varieties, reproduction and gardening, pruning, training, diseases and pests, irrigation, fertilization, harvesting and storage.

TRAININGS WILL BE GIVEN IN 5 MORE DISTRICTS

Cherry Production Techniques Training, which was started in Çubuk, hosted by ABB, will continue in the surrounding districts as well as in the central districts for domestic producers who are interested in or producing sour cherry.

The training program, in which the Chamber of Agriculture, headmen, regional cooperatives and producers showed great interest, will be given in Beypazarı, Kalecik, Şereflikoçhisar, Evren and Polatlı districts after Çubuk.

Stating that they learned modern production techniques and realized the mistakes they knew right, thanks to the training program held in Çubuk, local producers thanked the Metropolitan Municipality for this support with the following words:

Mehmet Kuruoglu: “We have cherry trees, but we do not get much yield. We will try to apply everything we have learned and seen in the trainings. In fact, the actions we have taken show that we are not doing it consciously, according to what is described here. Thank you to our Metropolitan Municipality for this support.”

Yusuf Akkaya: “I am engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. Thank you very much for the training on cherry production. When I looked at the education we received today, I saw that there were things we did not know and that what we knew was missing. We have to go a long way. For the last 2-3 years, we have already had a great support. If there is production in agriculture, there will be freedom in the economy. We would like to thank our President and everyone who contributed.”

Hidayet Akkaya: “We are very old sour cherry producers. My father was the first to bring sour cherry cultivation to Çubuk district. I came to this training program to raise awareness on how we can produce more quality and efficient production. Our municipality never leaves us alone and supports us.”
