Freedom of information

Expressing that "journalist" and "murdered" are two words that do not suit each other, Mustafa Özuslu said, "A journalist will ensure the freedom of information for me and the society. The need for information is basic needs such as air, water, bread. A journalist is a person who will tell us the events he sees in an accurate, objective and simple way. So what's going on? You see that person as a person whose murder is obligatory because he conveyed the news to you without any fraudulent or junk. All deaths are painful, but the death of journalists is an issue that really affects people deeply. I bow respectfully in front of the memory of the journalists who defended democracy and freedom of expression who were killed for the sake of bringing the truth to the public.”

We will do our best to overcome the obstacles in front of the press.

Dilek Gappi, President of Izmir Journalists Association, said, “I wish today had never happened. A day when we feel the pain to our bones. In fact, nothing has changed in recent years, neither in the world nor in Turkey. Known for his harsh criticism of the Union and Progress administration in the Özgüri Newspaper, Hasan Fehmi Bey was shot dead on the Galata Bridge on April 6, 1909 due to his thoughts and articles, and went down in press history as the first journalist killed in Turkey. During this process, 67 journalists in Turkey were targeted by bombs and bullets. Who we have not lost; From Hasan Tahsin to Sabahattin Ali, from Cengiz Polatkan to Abdi İpekçi, from Ümit Kaftancıoğlu to Çetin Emeç; We commemorate many of our colleagues, including Uğur Mumcu, with respect. We have only one message to them; We will do our best to overcome the obstacles in front of the press," he said.

The families of the journalists killed at the ceremony also expressed their feelings.
