In order for the athletes to continue their active sports life after injuries, an appropriate sportive rehabilitation program should be implemented. Emphasizing that lack of knowledge is also an effective factor in the emergence of sports injuries, experts state that the methods and approaches used in normal rehabilitation may not provide a quick and safe return to activity when applied to athletes.

Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department Head Prof. Dr. Deniz Demirci shared her views on the importance of athlete rehabilitation after injuries.

Rehabilitation should be personalized

Stating that injuries that occur due to sports or physical activity and prevent the person from participating in sports, physical activity or competition the next day, and also require medical care, are defined as sports injuries. Dr. Deniz Demirci said, “In order for the athlete to continue his active sports life again, an appropriate sportive rehabilitation program should be applied after the injury. The fact that this program is specific to the person, its planning in accordance with the rehabilitation rules, and the fact that it includes all stages of rehabilitation are the most important factors that provide a return to sports. In this regard, sports rehabilitation is important.” said.

Sportive rehabilitation requires teamwork

Stating that rehabilitation is generally a very long practice and requires teamwork, Prof. Dr. Deniz Demirci said, “While the doctor and physiotherapist play a key role in this team, it is also important that the physiotherapist, who develops and implements the treatment protocol in sportive rehabilitation, cooperates with the trainer in order to get to know the sport and the athlete. For this reason, a trainer is included in the rehabilitation team in sportive rehabilitation.” used the phrases.

Normal rehabilitation may not benefit the athlete

prof. Dr. Deniz Demirci said that the methods and approaches used in normal rehabilitation may not provide a quick and safe return to activity when applied to athletes and continued as follows:

“The competitive nature of the sporting environment requires an aggressive approach to rehabilitation. For this reason, in the rehabilitation of sports injuries, an individualized rehabilitation protocol including sport-specific functional exercises is combined with classical, clinical-based rehabilitation techniques to accelerate the return to activity. A clinical-based rehabilitation program is individual-specific and multi-stage. In advancing the rehabilitation program, each section should build on the previous section, and the protocols should be such as to prepare the athlete's entire body for a successful return to activity. In addition, while arranging a comprehensive rehabilitation program, factors such as the location of the injury, the nature of the sports branch, the age of the athlete, the level of performance and the loss of physical condition that may occur after the injury should be taken into account in detail.

Health information and education is very important

Emphasizing that the lack of knowledge is also an effective factor in the emergence of sports injuries, Prof. Dr. Deniz Demirci said, “As an important general precaution against injuries, advance information, namely training, is required. It is very important that professionals dealing with athlete health receive health information and education in order to prevent possible sports injuries. In order to determine and apply effective methods in sports rehabilitation, the therapist must have expertise in his field. This is only possible with a well-equipped training. For example, a sports physiotherapist has an effective role in the treatment of sports injuries with sufficient knowledge of the anatomy and pathophysiology of musculoskeletal injuries, and education about modern rehabilitation procedures.” said.

Offers career opportunities

Stating that the development and progress of the athlete's rehabilitation program depends on the clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills of the physiotherapists, Üsküdar University Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department Head Prof. Dr. Deniz Demirci said, “Sports rehabilitation will be valuable in terms of sports injuries treatment and athlete performance evaluation in the future as it is today. It will provide job opportunities to those who want to work in this field.” he said.
