Four words came to the fore in Chinese President Xi Jinping's recent statements on China-Europe relations. Xi Jinping met yesterday via videoconference with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Sincerity

In his speech, Xi said, “China and Europe have broad common interests and solid foundations of cooperation. China maintains a consistent policy towards Europe.” said.

Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen stated that Europe sincerely exchanged ideas with China and stated that they wanted to maintain the positive development trend of relations. Noting that the meeting was held in a candid manner, the parties also stated that they reached a consensus on many issues during the meeting.

Stability

President Xi also said during the meeting: “China and Europe should be the two great powers that defend world peace and fight the uncertainties in international conditions for the stability of bilateral relations. China and Europe should be two major markets that accelerate common development and support the globalization of the economy through open cooperation. China and Europe should be the two great civilizations that enable human progress and must deal with global problems in solidarity.”

Xi said they expect Europe to work with China to bring stability to the world.

Independence

Xi used the phrase "independent" four times in yesterday's meeting. Xi stressed that they want the European side to recognize China independently and to implement an independent policy towards China.

Cool

President Xi also said that it is necessary to be more calm in the face of dangerous situations. Putting forward his own proposals for the solution of the Ukraine crisis, Xi pointed out that the growth of regional conflicts should be prevented.

Noting that the Ukraine crisis should be resolved appropriately, Xi said, "For the proper handling of the crisis, the wrong medicine should not be used, and focusing on a single aspect of the issue rather than the whole should be avoided. People all over the world need to be prevented from paying the price.” said.

Pointing out that China and Europe should make efforts to control the developments and prevent the crisis from spreading to other countries, Xi Jinping said that the two sides should increase people's confidence in the future by protecting the system, rules and foundations of the world economy.
