Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer, “We believed that coastal fisheries should run through cooperatives again. The United Nations declared 2022 as the 'Year of Coastal Fishing'. He decided that it was necessary to support small-scale coastal fishing. Small scale producers, small coastal fisheries have to be encouraged. You are 90 percent of the industry. But unfortunately, as in other sectors of agriculture, we are faced with a lack of ownership, emptiness and lack of planning. Our producer, our coastal fisherman, does not know what he will do next month, next year, in fact, nothing about his own future. He's trying to stand on his own feet. We want to be with you. This is just the beginning, we will give you much more, stronger support. If you breathe, if you get the income that will sustain your life from this job, you will not aspire to another job anyway. You can earn your living here. There is a huge cost of living and inflation, we are facing an extraordinary economic crisis. You have a municipality that will continue to support you as a cooperative. We Karşıyaka Together with our Mayor, Cemil Tugay, we will continue to stand by you.”

"As long as you don't give up"

Stating that they support cooperatives in agriculture, transportation and urban transformation, Soyer said, “Cooperative democracy is a model of economic development. If there is democracy, it is possible to support the cooperatives, to ensure the spread of economic welfare and development and to ensure that everyone gets a fair share of the income produced. Because we believe in democracy, we will continue to support it because we believe that there is no regime where voting is done by going to the ballot box every 5 years. We will continue to support you in every field of life, in every sector. This is just the beginning, we will continue to be by your side. We will support you with all our strength, as long as you don't give up, continue on your way.”
