Who is Christian Goldbach

Russian mathematician, famous for his work on number theory. Goldbach was born on March 18, 1690, in the Russian city of Konigsberg (now Kaliningrad, Russia). In 1725 St. He became a professor of history and mathematics in St. Petersburg. In 1728, he settled in Moscow to give private lessons to Peter the 2nd, after staying there for a while, he went to Europe. He traveled around Europe to meet with the important mathematicians of the period and met mathematicians such as Leibniz, Bernoulli, De Moivre and Hermann.

Goldbach's important work is on Number theory. Almost all of his academic achievements are due to his work on Number theory and the articles he has published. In his work, Goldbach was in constant dialogue with Euler, the famous number theorist of the time. The work that brought the mathematician most famous was his conjecture about prime numbers. According to Goldbach, “Any even number greater than 2 can be expressed as the sum of two prime numbers.” Goldbach mentions this assumption in his famous letter to Euler in 1742. Regarding prime numbers, Goldbach also said that every odd number is the sum of three prime numbers (Goldbach hypothesis). However, he did not provide any proof regarding these two assumptions. Although Goldbach's first conjecture is still regarded as an unproven theory, his second conjecture was proved in 1937 as a result of Vinogradov's work.

Goldbach also worked on Finite sums, Curves theory and Equations theory.

He died in Moscow on 20 November 1764.
