International Women Directors Film Festival Begins

The 5th International Women Directors Film Festival, hosted by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, has started. The opening of the festival, which was organized with the theme of “Borders”, was held at the Ahmed Adnan Saygun Cultural Center.

With the support and hosting of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, the fifth International Women's Directors Film Festival started with a cocktail held at the Ahmed Adnan Saygun Cultural Center. The films to be screened as part of the festival, which will last until March 8, will be brought together with moviegoers at the Tire Municipality and the French Cultural Center. Various interviews and panels will also be held as part of the event, where some programs will be online.

Organized by the Women Directors Association, 59 films from 245 countries applied for the festival, of which 98 were selected by the jury to be screened at the festival.

Emphasizing the women's movement

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer attended the opening with a video message. Minister Tunç Soyerstated that the women's movement has a structural importance not only in gender equality, but also in art, the climate crisis and all social issues, and that cinema is the best way to convey this.

Village-Koop İzmir Union President Neptün Soyer emphasized that the work of the young directors of the Women Directors Association is admirable and said that women and men should stand side by side and together in the fight for women's rights. Neptün Soyer expressed that there is a man next to every successful woman and thanked those who contributed to the festival.

Nilay Kökkılınç, the head of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Gender Equality Commission, said that they have been working hard in the field of Gender Equality since March 31, 2019, when they were elected, and that they have always considered women's rights as human rights and always included them in their priority service areas. Kökkılınç also emphasized that cinema is one of the branches of art in which social messages are conveyed to the masses most effectively and stated that they are happy to support the International Women Directors Film Festival. Gülten Taranç, President of the Women Directors Association, is also the Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. Tunç SoyerHe thanked for his support of the festival.

At the opening, within the scope of the 5th International Women Directors Festival Achievement Awards, the Academy Achievement Award was given to Dr. Burcu Dabak, and the Director Achievement Award was presented to Nergis Abyar. The opening of the festival ended with a concert by Billur Koyuncu, Öykü Demirağ and Gülten Taranç.
