The team, which participated in the 6th National Antarctic Science Expedition, carried out under the auspices of the Presidency, under the responsibility of the Ministry of Industry and Technology, and under the coordination of TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute, reached Istanbul Airport on the evening of March 8 at 19.15 after a long journey.

The National Antarctic Science Expedition, which was held for the sixth time this year, lasted 46 days. During the expedition, 20 researchers, two of whom were foreigners, worked on 14 projects.

29 PROJECTS WORKED WITH 14 INSTITUTIONS IN THE SCIENCE DUE TO ANTARCTICA

As part of the 22th National Antarctic Science Expedition, which started on January 6, a 20-person expedition team reached the Antarctic continent on February 2, after passing two countries and four cities. He then sailed to Horseshoe Island.

The expedition crew of 20 and the crew of 30 went to Horseshoe Island, where the temporary science camp is located, and studied 29 scientific projects on life sciences, physical sciences, earth sciences and astronomy, of which 14 institutions are stakeholders. Two foreign researchers, one from Portugal and one from Bulgaria, were also included in the team.

NATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES WAS USED THIS YEAR

During the expedition, HAVELSAN's domestic and national GNSS receiver helped to collect data for location determination, while the 3D map of Horseshoe island was studied with the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) developed in our country and data on glacial depths were collected.

Communication of the team in the field was provided by ASELSAN radios and modular radio repeaters. TÜBİTAK SAGE's thermal battery was used to meet the energy needs when necessary.

In the past years, Turkey's first Meteorology station and the first three GNSS stations were established in Antarctica. The data collected from all stations sheds light on many scientific studies, especially climate change, sea level changes, tectonic movements and glacier observations. The seismic activity of the region was also monitored with the seismic station established this year.

TO HAVE A VOICE IN THE WHITE CONTINENT IN ANTARCTIC EXCURSIONS

Turkey's polar studies have been carried out under the roof of TUBITAK MAM Polar Research Institute (KARE) since 2020. TÜBİTAK MAM KARE aims to make regular scientific expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica, to increase the scientific studies carried out in the polar regions in our country, and to develop the scientific infrastructure that our country has in the polar regions. In this way, it is aimed to make Turkey a country that takes part in the decision mechanisms regarding the polar regions.

In this context, more than 60 projects have been completed and 86 publications have been made so far.
