EGİAD Alp Avni Yelkenbiçer, Chairman of the Board of the Aegean Young Businessmen Association, made a special statement for March 8, International Women's Day. Pointing out the importance of bringing women, who make up half of the population, to an equal position with the other half, Yelkenbiçer said, “The education given to girls is very important. If we want our future to be stronger, we must attach special importance to the education of girls.
We believe that a working life that ensures gender equality will be much more democratic, competitive and successful. We must spread the power of women equally in all areas of life. Let's not forget that we can only make a sound if we clap both hands,” she said. Emphasizing that half of the population is composed of women, Yelkenbiçer said, “While the female labor force participation rate in the majority of developed countries is between 34-18 percent, the OECD average is around 60 percent. When we were in the 80's, the fact that the female labor force participation rate in our country was only around 75 percent is a hindrance to the future.
Studies reveal that even a 5-point increase in women's employment reduces poverty by 15 percent. Similarly, the rate of institutionalized women entrepreneurs in Turkey is only 1,5 percent. Therefore, as a country, we will have achieved the fastest progress with the participation of women in business life and supporting their entrepreneurship. In short, the starting point of the Turkish economy is to increase women's entrepreneurship. Our association, which expresses at every opportunity that the most important driving force of the economy is entrepreneurship and carries out many works to increase the economic and social status of women, always supports women's entrepreneurship studies.
