After social media giants Facebook and Instagram, Russia also decided to close Google News. The reason is again "misleading information". After numerous social media apps and networks, Russia has now blocked Google News as well. The platform allegedly published materials containing “misleading public information about the course of the special military operation in Ukraine”.

The statement was announced in Moscow by the Russian media supervisor Roskomnadzor, according to the Interfax news agency. A court in Russia has already banned two blocked social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram, for allegedly "extremist". Behind the decision lies the decision of US company Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, to allow calls for violence against Russian troops in Ukraine.

In Russia, the war against Ukraine is called a “military operation”. Those who spread alleged false news about the Russian army in the country were also given prison terms.

Russia blocks dozens of media portals

Last week, Russian media watchdog Roskomnadzor blocked more than 30 Russian and international media websites. These include the Bellingcat research site, two Russian-language Israeli news sites, and regional portals such as Permdaily.ru.

Since 2016, the Russian newspaper “Novyje Isvestia”, published exclusively on the Internet, has also been blocked. Britain's BBC has also fallen victim to the bans. Several Ukrainian media, as well as an Estonian portal that also offers news in Russian, are no longer reachable from Russian IP addresses.
