Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş attended the "Green Transformation in Metropolitan Cities" session of the "ECO CLIMATE Summit" and talked about the projects they implemented to make the Capital a green and environmentally friendly city. Explaining that they started savings-oriented practices in the capital city, Yavaş said, “As mayors, we know that we have to direct the future. This is a social responsibility,” he said.
Organized by the Ankara Chamber of Commerce (ATO), the 'ECO CLIMATE Summit' hosted many Metropolitan Mayors as guests.
Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavaş, who participated in the summit held at the ATO Congresium and continued with various sessions throughout the day, gave important messages in the session on “Green Transformation in Metropolitan Cities”.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS EXPLAINED
President of the Union of Municipalities of Turkey and Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Fatma Şahin, Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş, Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay, Hatay Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Assoc. Dr. ATO Vice President and Ankara City Council Executive Board Chairman Halil İbrahim Yılmaz was the moderator of the session called “Green Transformation in Metropolitan Cities” attended by Lütfü Savaş and Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yücel Yılmaz.
The guest mayors, who signed the board with the words "We promise to leave a green world for tomorrow", which was set up at the summit, explained the environmentalist projects they implemented in their cities one by one.

ABB President Mansur Yavaş, who mentioned the effects of climate change and the importance of controlling water use in his speech, said, “Unfortunately, for many years in Turkey, we have been looking for a cure after losing something. We do not take precautionary measures and say, 'I wonder what should be done'. Because of this, unfortunately, we lose many things irretrievably.”
Noting that it is very easy to monitor water consumption, Yavaş continued his speech as follows:
“We can see how much water households consume. 70 percent of Ankara residents use 10 tons or less water, and 15 percent use up to 15 tons of water. Some of them irrigate the lawns of the villas or, like everywhere else, we have almost 100 thousand hobby gardens. He drains the water of the city because I will grow two tomatoes… Also, many people in the village cannot use their water because they water their garden. That's why we decided to switch to gradual water. The Ministry of Environment also made recommendations in this regard with a regulation. Currently, there are 60 thousand meters that can be controlled from the internet in Ankara, and we have 20 thousand ready. In fact, as all municipalities, we need to make a campaign and make it completely controllable from the internet. We need to control our water consumption. If this is not the case, we will run out of the city's water.”
Explaining that in the capital city, they made the condition that large estates should carry out their garden irrigation from the tanks where they collect rainwater, that they decided to establish charging stations suitable for electric cars in all of these sites, that they refilled Çubuk-1 Dam almost 100 years later and that they will use some of the water to be treated there for ANFA's lawn irrigation. Yavaş said, “We have put the recycling of waste water on the agenda, but we are also aware that we need to return to the plants that consume less water, to the landscape. We started to work on establishing solar fields for ourselves. We have set up a building in Keçiören, and we will also build it for AŞTİ. We also collect grass and waste and try to turn them into fertilizer. BELPLAS We have a company that manufactures liquid fertilizers. Hopefully, we will support our farmers by distributing this liquid fertilizer this year," he said.
Addressing the mayors and citizens, Yavaş urged everyone to use water sparingly:
“For example, we need to install an apparatus that presses more pressure but consumes less water at the mouths of all taps. I think that if the municipalities give it free of charge, we will save a lot of water. It rained this year, we have about 20 percent bottom and 35-40 percent water right now. However, there is a possibility that it is not water. Droughts used to be once every 30 years, but now we will experience it maybe once every 2-3 years. For this reason, awareness should be raised with such organizations and citizens and everyone should take responsibility and take responsibility as soon as possible.”
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY EMPOWERMENT FROM YAVAŞ
Stating that they put the green city action plan on the agenda, ABB President Mansur Yavaş gave the following information about environmentally friendly practices and new projects:
We converted the diesel bus to electric for the first time in Turkey. We are meeting with a company in England. This year, EGO gave 22 of its buses to be converted. We want to expand the scope of this. We are discussing with a company the power of converting private buses in Turkey or buses used by municipalities to electric. When it comes to air pollution in Ankara, it used to be, but it decreased when it switched to natural gas, but when you look at the website of the Ministry, we see pollution in different regions in Ankara. The reason is vehicular traffic. Although coal is not used in Ankara, we see that it somehow exceeds the threshold limit in certain regions annually due to this vehicle traffic. For recycling, incineration plants were established years ago, but with the composting facility, we are trying to collect the grass and wastes of the villas on the Incek side, especially on the Gölbaşı side, and turn them into fertilizer. We also produce liquid fertilizer. We continue our rural development projects. We have grant works for people to participate in production in their village to produce. We support all women's cooperatives at the same time, we enable them to produce. In addition to this, our geography has very difficult bike paths, but we started it, but now we are trying to finish all the ones in the city main transportation plan, almost 40 kilometers of which have been built.”
Noting that they have to shape the future as mayors, Yavaş said, “Citizens listen to us carefully. We have a great responsibility to take the measures I have mentioned and the measures I cannot count at the moment in all metropolitan cities. This is a social responsibility… I hope we will overcome this with the projects we do," he said.
After the session, Mayor Yavaş followed the concert of the Antakya Civilizations Choir, and then Hatay Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Assoc. Dr. He poured the sherbet of the künefe brought to the summit by Lütfü Savaş and offered it to the participants.
