Supporting the unearthing of the city's deep-rooted history, the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality rolled up its sleeves for the promotion of the Yeşilova and Yassıtepe mounds, whose history dates back 8 years. ESHOT General Directorate's bus number 500 running on the Bornova Metro - Kemer Transfer Center line was dressed with the themes of Yeşilova and Yassıtepe. The goal is to create social awareness for these two great historical riches of İzmir.
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality supported the promotion of Yeşilova and Yassıtepe mounds with a new study. ESHOT General Directorate dressed the Bornova Metro-Kemer Transfer Center bus with line number 59 with Yeşilova and Yassıtepe themes. The bus, which also includes mounds on its route, carried ESHOT management, excavation team, members of Karacaoğlan and Yeşilova Neighborhoods Culture and Solidarity Association (KAYED) to Yeşilova Mound for the first time.
Named after archaeologist Mehmet Yurtsever
The event continued with the opening ceremony at Yeşilova Mound. Yeşilova Tumulus Visitor Center Exhibition Hall, named after the archaeologist Mehmet Yurtsever, an employee of Bornova Municipality, who lost his life as a result of a heart attack last year, was put into service today. The ceremony was attended by Bornova Deputy Mayor Barbaros Taşer, İzmir Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Murat Karacanta, ESHOT General Manager Erhan Bey, Yeşilova Mound Excavation Director Assoc. Dr. Zafer Derin and KAYED President Serap Yılmaz also attended.
“We must transfer history to the future”
Speaking at the ceremony where the works carried out both to support the promotion of the UNESCO Izmir Historical Harbor City and to emphasize the importance of the first settlement area 8 years ago were explained, KAYED President Serap Yılmaz said that they are working to protect history and transfer it to the future.

Yeşilova Mound Excavation Head Assoc. Dr. Zafer Derin stated that the works here lead to many activities that also affect the future, and said, “The excavations at Yeşilova Mound continue with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the university, as well as the support of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and the non-governmental organization KAYED. Every area here brings with it time travel. As soon as you enter through the door, there is the opportunity to see many objects in science on the one hand, education on the other, and time travel on the other. I would like to thank all the support given,” he said.
It will reach more people
İzmir Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Murat Karaçanta stated that they will reach more people with the ESHOT bus, which is dressed as Yeşilova-Yassıtepe Mounds and the visitor center in order to learn about İzmir's cultural past and to raise interest in its archaeological sites and history.
Ruins Status Gospel
Karacanta said, “The aim here is to support the promotion of Izmir Historical Harbor City, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, as a connection point, and to tell the public about the first settlement area 8 years ago. This application, made for promotion, will be among the firsts of Izmir and will set an example for other cities. İzmir is our city where the most historical excavations are made. We have six ruins. We have started our work to give this place the status of a ruined place. We plan to build the ruins as soon as possible and open them to visits," he said.
“We want to raise awareness”
ESHOT General Manager Erhan Bey emphasized that Yeşilova Mound in particular is a historical and touristic richness of the city. Noting that these values are not well known even among the residents of the city, Mr. finished his words as follows: "Last year, we dressed our buses operating in these regions in order to promote our Bergama, Selçuk-Efes and Çeşme districts. As of today, our bus that introduces Yeşilova and Yassıtepe mounds will be on the roads. We think that this practice will contribute to the increase of social awareness about our historical and touristic riches.”
Bornova Deputy Mayor Barbaros Taşer also thanked those who contributed to the works.
