Soyer: “Our target in two years is 5 million tourists”
Speaking about the inadequacy of the number of tourists coming to the city, the President Tunç Soyer“This is really a great sadness for us. It is a great loss that such a city, an ancient city, a city with so much value, receives so few tourists. It's an unacceptable situation. It's not destiny, it's changeable. We will change that. We have a lot of work. Our goal in the next two years is to bring 5 million tourists to the city and we will do it. We will remove tourism from the sun, sea and sand triangle. We are very determined. The first cruise ship will arrive on March 16. We have to explain ourselves all over the world,” he said.

Emphasizing the mistakes of the agricultural policies of the period, President Soyer explained the importance of small producers. Providing information about the works carried out with the vision of "Another Agriculture is Possible" based on the fight against drought and poverty, Soyer said, "If you live in such an extraordinarily beautiful geography, you have to use the opportunities offered by the geography. We give both purchase and sale guarantee to our manufacturer. We say you just produce. We say that we will buy products that are compatible with nature and climate as we produce them. We do this through cooperatives,” he said, emphasizing the importance of cooperatives.
“We are in the geography where the most beautiful agrotourism will be done in the world”
Mentioning the connection between agriculture and tourism, President Soyer said, “There is a study called agrotuzim all over the world. Luar region in France, Tuscany region in Italy… Production is made there, these production processes are also turned into a tourism destination. This geography is perhaps the geography where the world's most beautiful agrotourism will take place. Ödemiş, Tire, Beydağ, Bergama, Kozak Plateau, the Peninsula region… These are extraordinarily beautiful places that we can call the paradise of the world. Let alone the tourist coming from outside, it is little known even in Izmir. People from many parts of Turkey do not know. We are like a fish living in an ocean without knowing it. We need to discover the richness and beauty of this sea and market it to the whole world. We have the power to do this. As the local government, we are working for the promotion of İzmir, we are making restorations by giving importance to the historical texture of the city. We sponsor our ancient city excavations and continue to open tourism offices in different parts of the world. In this way, we promote our city both in our country and in the world. Actually, there are two things we need to do; The first is access to scientific knowledge. The second is to hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder," he said.
“We have come to the end in the regulation of agricultural tourism area”
Stating that although there are areas such as agricultural area and commercial area in the zoning legislation, there is no zoning regulation describing agricultural tourism and they have come to an end for this, Mayor Soyer said, “We are finalizing the planning work that will be a model for Turkey. Thus, we will create an opportunity for entrepreneurs, producers and peasants who want to do agricultural tourism. "Within the framework of the circular economy and circular culture criteria, that is, in harmony with nature, climate, soil, and fighting against drought and poverty," he said.
“We have to reduce the scale”
Talking about the concept of the Cittaslow, Mayor Soyer stated that the speed of people should be in harmony with the speed of nature. Saying that the climate crisis will be more present in our lives, Soyer reminded that the way to cope with the climate crisis is to adopt a circular economy and circular culture. Noting that İzmir is the only Cittaslow Metropol, Soyer said, “We want to turn this into a success story and create a model that can be applied in other metropolises of the world. The essence of everything is to localize, to shrink. As it grows, it moves away from being sustainable and manageable. So are living spaces. We have to reduce the scale,” he said.
“Many metropolises expect Izmir to work”
Explaining that they have determined two pilot areas for Cittaslow Metropol, Soyer said, “One of the poorest neighborhoods of İzmir is a market place on the outskirts of Kadifekale and the other. Karşıyakaa neighborhood in We are trying to implement the Cittaslow criteria in these two neighborhoods. My friends listen to the citizens in those neighborhoods one by one. We describe a roadmap through reports. The models and solutions we will present in these two neighborhoods will turn into a model that we will spread to other districts of İzmir and present to metropolises. Many metropolises, from Brussels to Barcelona, from Busan in South Korea to Detroit in the USA, are waiting for Izmir to work. They can't wait to see how the practices in these two neighborhoods will be implemented in their own cities. Being aware of this responsibility we have undertaken, we continue to work meticulously. The existence of a human being in this universe is not something that can be measured by the per capita share of the gross national product. Human beings want to be happy. Income is not the only criterion. Neighborhood, village culture, that is, living together, producing and solidarity… Human beings are happy with these.
