The 17th Election General Assembly of Izmir City Council was held today at Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center. Adnan Akyarlı became the new chairman of the City Council. “Struggling to solve problems”

Pointing out that these problems are mainly caused by the crisis of democracy, President Soyer said: “The starting point of overcoming the crisis of democracy is the local, that is, the point we are in. Because the essence of democracy is based on participation and common sense. Democracy can only be democracy in the real sense if it rises from the local. The deficiencies of representative democracy can only be filled with the power of the local. This is only possible with the spread of participatory democracy culture. City councils are the leading actors that will foster participatory democracy. Because a well-functioning, active city council; it does not only ensure that vulnerable groups participate in the administration. It also sets the cornerstones of rights-based advocacy and a just life. of poverty; contributes directly to the solution of economic and social problems. In sum, it removes the obstacles to democracy, one by one. Izmir City Council is one of the city councils that struggle to solve the problems I have mentioned.”

“Our support to the City Council will continue”

Soyer stated that the Izmir City Council carries out very valuable works in order to make democracy truly dominant in this geography where the foundations of democracy were laid. Expressing that he believes that the Izmir City Council will continue to work with great devotion in the solution of the multiple crises in the coming days, Tunç SoyerStating that the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality will work together until the end no matter which candidate is elected, he said, “I promise that I will try to pave the way for the City Council's more active participation in the city administration during this transition period. With the presence of the City Council, it will show in İzmir that democracy is not a regime that goes to the polls every five years, but a culture of life.”

Thanks to Soyer, we got to the super league

Mahmut Açıkkar, Deputy Chairman of the Izmir City Council, who made the opening speech of the Board, said, “We have worked for days, without taking orders, to be useful to a place on our own initiative, to help our city, our democracy, the future, happiness and welfare of the people, even a little bit. We established the City Council in 2010, we remained idle between 2015-2020. Our Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, who now hears our requests. Tunç Soyerhas given us a modern building in a central location. 9 people from Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Council were appointed. He showed how much he is related to the city council by giving 19 staff. I thank him. Our president supported us in every way and helped us to get back to the super league.”

New president elected in 3rd round

After the speeches, the election took place. For the presidency of Izmir City Council, Prof. Dr. Adnan Akyarlı, Seniye Nazik Işık, Metin Erten and Yalçın Kocabıyık competed. While the first two rounds of the election were held with four candidates, Nazık Işık and Adnan Akyarlı competed in the third round. prof. Dr. Akyarlı was elected as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Izmir City Council, winning 291 of the 177 votes used by the representatives of public institutions and organizations, non-governmental organizations and chambers in the fourth round of the election.
