The Istanbul-Izmir Highway, which reduces the road transportation between Istanbul and Izmir to 3,5 hours and employs thousands of people, not only shortens the distance between the two cities, but also makes a positive contribution to the economy of the provinces it passes through. Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu pointed out that 306 new facilities with operating certificates were opened on the route and said, “While the project contributed 8,5 billion liras to GDP in the production sector, 8 new OIZs were positioned on the highway route. In the region, which has become a center of attraction for investors, an expansion of 13 thousand 2 hectares was made in 635 OIZs in the existing one.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu made a written statement about the Istanbul-İzmir Highway; He noted that the project, which was implemented with the Build-Operate-Transfer financing model, covers a total of 384 kilometers, of which 42 kilometers are highways and 426 kilometers are connection roads.

Stating that there is also an Osmangazi Bridge with a length of 5 thousand 2 meters on the Istanbul-Izmir O-907 Highway, Karaismailoğlu said, 21 viaducts, two of which are made of steel, with a total length of 571 thousand 38 meters, 6 tunnels of 445 thousand 3 meters, 179 bridges, 715 hydraulic box culverts, 291 underpasses. He stated that there are box culverts, 22 junctions, 18 service areas, 4 maintenance and operation centers, a main control center and 21 toll booths.

BOTH DAILY LIFE AND THE ECONOMY REVISED

Karaismailoğlu, Minister of Transport, said, “The project in the region, which includes the cities of Istanbul, Kocaeli, Yalova, Bursa, Balıkesir, Manisa and İzmir, where a large part of the population lives, and which is one of the important export gates of Turkey opening to the world, also benefited local development. While the project further revitalized the daily life and economy in the region, it contributed to the development of tourism and industry in the region. Thousands of personnel were employed in the recreational facilities, maintenance and operation centers and other commercial areas along the Istanbul-Izmir Highway route.

NUMBER OF FACILITIES ON THE ROUTE INCREASED

Emphasizing that the shorter distance and faster access to the cities via the Istanbul-Izmir Highway also activates the tourism activities in the region, Karaismailoğlu stated that thanks to the project, the provinces in the region exceeded their capacities, and new investments were paved. “After the project, 306 new facilities with operating licenses were opened on the route. Minister of Transport Karaismailoğlu said, “31 thousand new rooms with operating certificates have joined tourism” and continued as follows:

“61 thousand beds were added. While the tourism season in the region is getting longer, the number of visitors to the tourism centers has also increased. Due to the existence of commercial ports, the region, where a significant part of the exports and imports from Turkey is carried out, continued its development after the convenience of transportation. While the project contributed 8,5 billion liras to GDP in the production sector, 8 new OIZs were positioned on the highway route. In the region, which has become a center of attraction for investors, 13 thousand 2 hectares have been expanded in 635 OIZs. Here, too, 54 thousand personnel are employed.”

EXPANSION IN AGRICULTURE AND LIVESTOCK SECTORS

Karaismailoğlu, who stated that there were developments after the project in the agricultural sector, which contributed significantly to the country's economy, pointed out that thanks to the suitable geographical conditions and climatic characteristics of the region, every branch of agricultural activities was included, 300 thousand decares of cultivated area increased in agricultural areas and 408 thousand tons of increase in production volume was achieved. Karaismailoğlu said, “In animal husbandry, an increase of 713 thousand animals in sheep and 350 thousand in cattle was seen. Thanks to the highway, the products produced in agricultural lands reach the consumer in a much shorter time.
