The General Directorate of Security (EGM) stated that although there has been a significant decrease in traffic accidents in the last 5 years, there has been an increase in traffic accidents involving intercity passenger buses recently, and that the inspections will continue.

In the statement made by the EGM, it was stated: “Traffic Accidents Committed by Interurban Buses In our country, especially in January 2022, due to the adverse weather conditions experienced due to the season, buses carrying intercity passengers with D1/B1 authorization certificate were involved in more traffic accidents compared to the same period of the previous year.

Although there has been a significant decrease trend in traffic accidents in the last 5 years in our country, it has been observed that there has been an increase in traffic accidents involving intercity passenger buses recently. In the last 5 months compared to the same period of the previous year; It was determined that 100,7 traffic accidents were involved with an increase of 275% and 136,4 of our citizens lost their lives in these accidents with an increase of 26%. In the same period, according to U-ETDS data, the number of passengers increased by 100% to 14,8 million, and the number of flights increased by 53% to 1 million 145 thousand.

When traffic accidents are examined; It occurs more intensely between 02.00 and 08.00 hours of the day due to lack of attention due to sleeplessness and fatigue, they are involved in accidents such as going off the road, overturning, and rear-end collision due to the drivers not driving in accordance with the road and weather conditions, It is understood that they are injured due to injury and that the consequences of the accident are aggravated.

In order to prevent accidents and meet the increasing travel demand more safely; Necessary controls were made by the traffic units at the bus terminals and on the routes so that the companies and drivers, especially winter tires, took precautions to start their journey, and all companies and drivers were warned to follow the weather and road conditions and to be sensitive in complying with the speed, working and resting times. In addition, passengers were informed about wearing seat belts during the journey by getting on buses by traffic personnel.

In ensuring road traffic safety; Drivers are reminded to comply with traffic rules, company owners to send vehicles with suitable tires and winter maintenance on the buses, and passengers are reminded to wear their seat belts during the journey. It is respectfully announced to the public that it will continue in this way.”
