Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyermet with the business people and industrialists of Izmir at the online meeting held under the coordination of the Federation of Western Anatolian Industrialists' and Business People's Associations (BASİFED). At the meeting, the current problems of the business world, as well as the agenda of the country and the city, were discussed.

Road, bread and water

Chairman answering questions at the meeting Tunç SoyerReferring to the joint public statement made by 11 CHP Metropolitan Mayors, “There are three main topics; road, bread and water. Local governments need VAT and SCT exemption in the use of diesel in public transportation. Likewise, one of our serious costs in water production is electricity costs. The extraordinary rise in electricity tariffs creates a great grievance. Our third request is about bread. There is a need for some discounts regarding the flour and logistics we receive from the Turkish Grain Board in the application of Halk Bread.”

Despite the economic crisis, we are able to build the Buca Metro

Speaking about the Buca Metro investment, Mayor Soyer said, “We will lay the foundation of Buca Metro on February 14 to show our love for İzmir. Buca Metro is the biggest investment in İzmir history. Despite the economic crisis, we are doing this when all institutions are suffering from the increase in foreign exchange. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is able to do this. However, this is not something that happens by accident. It took a year and a half to work and a consortium of 490 million Euros was formed. From the day we laid the foundation until the moment we cut the ribbon, we have no financial problems. There is no reason why it should not end on the stipulated date. I think this is a very meaningful step for Turkey. Despite the crisis, we are making perhaps one of the biggest investments in Turkey.”

Invitation from President Soyer to business people

Inviting all business people to the groundbreaking ceremony of Buca Metro, Mayor Soyer said, “Buca Metro will carry 400 thousand people a day. This will be the first metro line to be built vertically from the coast into the city. It will relieve the traffic of Izmir's most crowded district. In this way, we will have the opportunity to withdraw a large part of our rubber-tyred vehicles. This will save 48 million Euros per year. We will have secured the financing of the debt before its maturity. We will complete the Buca Metro entirely with our own resources, without taking a penny. "We will shine a light of hope in the darkest times in Turkey," he said.

Kulturpark is starting to renew

President Soyer, who also answered the question about Kültürpark, stated that the giant area, which has been negotiating for a long time at the Monuments Board, has come to an end and said, “We are starting the renovation works starting from the gates of Kültürpark. After that, we have work to do inside. We will have very important works related to the integration of Kültürpark with the public. Most importantly, we will hold the international gastronomy fair Terra Madre in Kulturpark in September.”

Expo 2026 will break Izmir's shell

President Soyer also spoke about Expo 2026 İzmir, which will bring the ornamental plants industry together and said, “Expo 2026 means that this city breaks its shell and integrates with the world. By hosting the Expo, we are in the effort of a study that will increase the welfare of this city.”
