Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank made evaluations about the discovery of two planets 1001 light years away in the "Exoplanet Discovery Project by Timing Method" carried out with the support of the TÜBİTAK 1336 Program. Stating that planets were discovered around double stars for the first time in Turkey, Varank said, "The director of the TÜBİTAK supported project, Ankara University Faculty Member Assoc. Dr. I congratulate Özgür Baştürk and his team and wish them many more successes.” used the phrases.

TUG TELESCOPE IS ALSO USED

According to the sharing made from TÜBİTAK's social media accounts, the discovered planets were named "Kepler451c" and "Kepler451d". With this discovery, in addition to a previously discovered planet in the "Kepler-451" system, two more giant planets in the size of Jupiter were discovered. The 1 meter diameter T100 telescope of the TÜBİTAK National Observatory (TUG) was also used for observation purposes. The study was carried out by TUBITAK Assoc. Dr. It was supported within the scope of the 118 R&D Project titled “Exoplanet Discovery by Timing Method”, numbered 042F1001, carried out by Özgür Baştürk.

Study; In addition to the 1 m diameter T100 telescope of the TÜBİTAK National Observatory, Prof. Dr. The Berahitdin Albayrak telescope was made using the light measurement observations obtained by the 80 cm diameter telescope of the Istanbul University Observatory at the Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Ulupınar Observatory campus, as well as the observations obtained by the Kepler and TESS space telescopes.

In the study, by analyzing the eclipse times of the binary star, two more Jupiter-like planets were detected in addition to a previously discovered planet in the Kepler-451 system.

Since Turkish researchers found the 21st and 22nd planets around binary stars, the number of planets discovered in this sense has increased to 22. One of the planets is approximately 1,5 times the mass of Jupiter, and the other is close to twice the mass.

Also, Kepler-451 is the second binary star system after Kepler-47 to have more than two planets discovered around it.

The scientific article explaining the discovery of planets in the Kepler-451 system was also published in the "Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society", published by Oxford University Press.
