Announcing that the country's fixed broadband speed has increased by 65 percent in the last year, reaching 44,77 Mbps, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu evaluated the year 2021 regarding internet infrastructure. Indicating that Turkey's fiber infrastructure length has reached 455 thousand kilometers, Karaismailoğlu emphasized that internet speed will be much higher than the world average with increasing investments in the coming period.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu made a written statement about internet speed. Pointing out that Turkey has a speed above the world average in mobile broadband, Karaismailoğlu said, “According to the international data prepared by the Ookla-Speedtest company, the world average in mobile broadband is 29,55, while Turkey's speed here is 31,43 Mbps. Fixed broadband speed has also increased by 1 percent in the last 65 year, reaching 44,77 Mbps.

DEMAND FOR FAST INTERNET IS INCREASING

Karaismailoğlu stated that increasing fiber investments in recent years and end-user demand for high-speed internet access have played an important role in Turkey's development in both fixed and mobile broadband speeds.

“When the speeds offered to subscribers in the fixed broadband internet market are analyzed through BTK data, it is seen that the number of subscriptions with speeds of 10 Mbit/s and below has decreased over the years, and subscriptions with speeds over 50 Mbit/s have become widespread. The number of subscribers, which are served at speeds over 50 Mbit/s, has increased by more than 85 percent in the last year. It is noteworthy that the number of subscriptions offered at speeds of 10 Mbit/s and below has decreased by almost half.”

ADDITIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE REACHED 2,2 MILLION HOUSES

Underlining that the number of subscribers receiving service from xDSL, cable and fiber infrastructure has more than doubled in the last 8 years, Minister of Transport Karaismailoğlu said that the number of subscribers, which was 2 million 2013 thousand 3 in the third quarter of 8, was 113 million 354 in the third quarter of 2021. He noted that it reached 3. Karaismailoğlu said, “While the rate of using xDSL infrastructure in service delivery to subscribers has decreased over the years, the rate of cable and especially fiber infrastructure usage is increasing,” Karaismailoğlu said, “As of the 17rd quarter of 239, FTTH/FTTB/cable infrastructure was brought to 494 million households. As of the third quarter of 2020, 3 million households were invested. The number of households whose cable infrastructure was taken increased by more than 15,7 percent. While the households whose FTTC infrastructure was taken were 2021 million in 3, an additional investment was made in 2,2 million households in 15. While the length of fiber infrastructure was approximately 2020 thousand kilometers in 18, it has reached 2021 thousand kilometers today.

87,5 PERCENT OF 92 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS GET SERVICE FROM FIBER INFRASTRUCTURE

Emphasizing that while the internet infrastructure develops in Turkey, the number of subscribers and the rate of use increase rapidly, Minister of Transport Adil Karaismailoğlu said, “It is seen that the number of broadband subscribers has increased by 8,2 percent annually. The number of broadband internet subscribers, which was 2008 million in 6, reached 2021 million in the third quarter of 87,5. According to the latest data, approximately 92 percent of the subscribers in Turkey receive service over fiber infrastructure. In the last 5 years, the monthly usage of fixed subscribers on the internet has increased approximately 3 times, and 2 percent in the last 73 years.

WE WILL GO MUCH ABOVE THE WORLD AVERAGE IN SPEED

Stating that Turkey is one of the world's leading countries in internet access and usage, Karaismailoğlu underlined that with increasing investments in the coming period, internet speed will be much higher than the world average. Pointing out that broadband internet usage has increased rapidly since 1993, which is accepted as the starting date of internet usage in Turkey, Minister Karaismailoğlu said, “In recent years, there has been a significant increase in infrastructure investments in our country and high-speed internet delivery over broadband infrastructures has become widespread.”

CALCULATED SPEEDS DO NOT SHOW OUR COUNTRY'S FIXED BROADBAND INFRASTRUCTURE CAPACITY

Minister Karaismailoğlu, who drew attention to the shares made from various sources about Turkey's internet speed recently, continued as follows:

“Research companies generally publish reports on internet speed rather than organizations such as OECD and ITU, and these reports are prepared using surveys and similar methods based on measurements of companies' own servers or systems. The data in question can be affected by parameters such as the number of samples, the methodology and the interconnections and distance of the system used by the measuring company to the relevant infrastructure. In this context, it is seen that there is no accepted standard criterion for the measurement of internet speed in the world and different results have emerged. When we look at the subscription status according to internet speeds in our country, as of the third quarter of 2021, 56% of the subscribers use internet packages with speeds of 10-24 Mbps and 33% use internet packages with speeds of 24-100 Mbps. On the other hand, different operators in our country offer broadband internet service to end users at speeds up to 1.000 Mbps, and the calculated average speeds do not indicate the capacity of the fixed broadband infrastructure installed in our country. For; Average broadband access speeds are directly affected by the preferences of subscribers. Therefore, while it is possible to provide high-speed internet over the fixed broadband infrastructure in our country, subscribers prefer relatively low speeds. However, in recent years, we have observed that user preferences have started to change in this direction and there is a tendency towards higher speeds. In line with this development, it is possible to meet higher speeds in many locations if subscriptions at higher internet speeds are requested.”
