The stem cell of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality firefighter Ali Sinan Batmaz, who donated stem cells to Öykü Arin three years ago, was matched with a child who was being treated for leukemia. Stating that he is excited because it will help the child who is waiting for a bone marrow transplant, whose name he does not even know, stick to life, Batmaz said, "Be a donor, save lives."

Firefighter Ali Sinan Batmaz, who works at the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department, will be a hope for a child who is being treated for leukemia. It was determined that the marrow of Batmaz, who donated stem cells in the "Hope for Story Arin" campaign, held about three years ago, was XNUMX% compatible with a child awaiting a bone marrow transplant.

“My eyes filled with tears when I heard the news”

Stating that the information about the buoyant match was conveyed to him by the Red Crescent, he said, “It is an indescribable feeling to hope for the recovery of a child. When I was called for the first time, my eyes filled with tears, I was very happy. I work to be helpful to people. That's why I work in the fire department. Because we contribute to society with what we do. I had the same feelings in a rescue operation, in a fire, after an earthquake. Now I am very happy to be able to add meaning to someone's life, to make sense of my own existence and my own life.”

Donate save lives

Batmaz, who calls everyone to be a stem cell donor; “Due to the coronavirus epidemic, people are hesitant to donate blood and stem cells. The epidemic should not prevent us from being stem cell donors. We still have a chance to be hope for someone. The number of stem cell donors needs to increase so that there are donors who will heal the patients.

What happened?

For Öykü Arin, who was diagnosed with Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukemia (JMML) 3 years ago in İzmir, the campaign “Be hope for Öykü Arin” was started by mother Eylem Şen Yazıcı and father Çağdaş Yazıcı. Within the scope of the campaign, thousands of people donated stem cells. Öykü Arin received a semi-compatible stem cell transplant from her father and the marrow had a rate of 98,5 percent.

The family visited Mayor Soyer last year and thanked Mayor Soyer and Izmir Metropolitan Municipality workers for their support to the Öykü Arin Become Hope campaign.
