Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç SoyerIn line with the 's social municipality understanding, the scope of the Halk Ekmek project is being expanded. The idle capacities of the bakeries in the city will be put into operation in order to both deliver cheap and healthy bread to more people in İzmir and support the tradesmen who are experiencing financial difficulties against the increasingly difficult living conditions. While 120-130 thousand breads are produced daily at the Halk Ekmek factory, double this figure is targeted with the inclusion of the bakeries with which the agreement has been made in the project. Minister Tunç Soyerwill start the project by signing a protocol with the bakers.

“Demand for economically priced bread has increased”

Stating that the demand for economically priced bread has increased due to the high cost of living, the President Tunç Soyer “Like all sectors, bakeries producing bread were also adversely affected by these difficult economic conditions. The main operating expenses such as electricity, natural gas and fuel and the extraordinary cost increases in raw materials such as flour, yeast and salt are looming. Instead of making a costly and time-consuming investment to increase our production capacity, we decided to activate the idle production capacities of industrial bakers. We aim to meet the demand for cheap bread of our people at the highest level by producing the bread we will sell in these bakeries. While continuing production in our Halk Ekmek factory, we will also bring cheap bread to more İzmir residents by activating the idle capacities of bakers.”

The increase in costs is also reflected in the bread prices.

1,5 grams of white bread produced at the Halk Ekmek factory and sold for 230 liras and wholemeal bread of the same weight will be sold for 21 liras starting tomorrow (2 February) due to the high increase in costs. In the market conditions where 230 grams of bread is sold for 2,5 liras, Halk Ekmek will continue to provide cheap bread to İzmir residents.

Çiğli, the bread produced at the Halk Ekmek factory, Karşıyaka, Bayraklı, Bornova, Konak, Buca, Karabağlar, Gaziemir districts are delivered to the people of Izmir with 63 kiosks.
