Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist Assoc. Dr. Nihal Özaras shared information about the inconveniences caused by choosing the wrong pillow and made important recommendations.

A pillow plays an important role in a quality sleep. Stating that the choice of pillow gains more importance in those who have problems such as calcification and hernia in the neck, experts state that the pillow should support the neck structure and take the load on the muscles and ligaments. Experts recommend the use of medium-firm pillows, which are high enough to fill the neck pit and not leave a gap for quality sleep.

Pillows should be given importance for quality sleep.

Stating that the pillow has an important role in ensuring a quality sleep, Assoc. Dr. Nihal Özaras said, “The choice of pillow becomes even more important in those who have problems such as calcification and hernia in the neck. When the appropriate pillow is not used, the person cannot have a restful sleep, and neck pain that disrupts his daily life may occur. This subject is also of interest to the scientific world, and there is a wide variety of research on the choice of the ideal pillow.” used his statements.

One type of pillow does not benefit everyone

Stating that the body structure of each individual and accordingly the neck structure is different, Assoc. Dr. Özaras said, “Therefore, it would not be right to expect a single type of pillow to be suitable for everyone. There are pillows on the market that are made in different shapes and are thought to support the neck. These pillows can support the neck pit in certain positions, but since we change positions unconsciously during sleep, it does not seem possible to maintain this support throughout sleep.” said.

Pillow should be medium firm

Emphasizing that the pillow should support the neck structure of the person, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist Assoc. Dr. Nihal Özaras said, “The pillow should also take the load on the muscles and ligaments. Pillows that are too soft to take the shape of the neck structure do not provide adequate support. Very hard pillows, on the other hand, force the neck structures. Pillows of medium firmness are ideal. In addition, the pillow material should be chosen well, it should not cause sweating. he said.

Wrong pillow choice affects quality of life

Stating that the height of the pillow varies according to the neck structure of the person, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist Assoc. Dr. Nihal Özaras said, “At this point, it is not possible to talk about a single height. Pillows that are too high cause the neck to bend forward, while pillows that are too low cause the head to lag behind the body. Both positions increase neck problems and cause pain. The pillow should be high enough to fill the neck cavity and not leave it in the gap. Choosing the wrong pillow will cause neck pain and affect the person's sleep and thus quality of life. Therefore, choosing the right pillow is very important.” he said.
