Stephan Wöllenstein, head of Volkswagen's China division, said that within a few years, fully autonomous self-driving cars will be on the streets of China. Wöllenstein told the German press, “3. and 4th Tier "autonomous driving, they currently have the necessary technical equipment. The 3rd stage of autonomous driving is that the vehicle can go on its own from time to time; The 4th stage means that the driver can completely give up driving the vehicle and can sit like a passenger of the autonomous vehicle.

VW states that it will be able to mass-produce Tier 4 fully autonomous vehicles in China in the next three to four years. The vehicles in question will be able to drive autonomously in complex situations, such as in urban areas, for example, at intersections, beyond just driving straight on the highway.

Chinese manufacturers, who until recently tried to keep up with international competition in this field, now have full competitive power in electric cars, autonomous driving and connectivity. That's why Volkswagen is strengthening its research and development activity in China. As a matter of fact, the number of employees of VW's software company Cariad in China, which is currently 700, will double in the coming years.

Through this activity, VW aims to have a serious competitive power not only in China but also in Europe. As a matter of fact, almost all Chinese electro-auto manufacturers are already preparing to enter the European market.
