Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital Orthopedic Specialist Assist. Assoc. Dr. Numan Duman shared important information and advice to parents about the problem called 'nanny elbow', which is mostly seen in the elbow joints of children aged 1-5 years as a result of being pulled from their arms.

Movements such as pulling the hand upwards or shaking it by pulling the arms while the elbows are in the open and straight position cause elbow dislocations, called 'nanny elbow' in children. Experts who stated that nanny elbow is frequently seen in children aged 1-5; states that it is necessary to pay attention to the symptoms of sudden pain, swelling and limitation of movement in the elbow. Experts recommend that elbow dislocation, which often raises suspicion of fracture in families, is very difficult to diagnose on x-ray, and it should not be delayed in the treatment, which is quite simple so that it does not cause disability.

It is most common in the 1-5 age group.

Stating that the protrusion of the elbow joint is called 'nanny elbow', Orthopedic Specialist Assist. Assoc. Dr. Numan Duman said, “The age group where the problem is most common is 1-5 years old. In this age group, since the development of the annular ligament holding the 'Radius' head in the elbow joint is not completed, the elbow joint tends to protrude. Dislocation occurs because the ligament, which has not completed its development, cannot hold the radial head bone in place, especially in movements such as pulling upwards of the hand when the elbow is in an open and straight position, or shaking the child by pulling the arms. said.

Causes suspicion of fracture in the family

Emphasizing that in the event of dislocation of the elbow joint, sudden pain, swelling and limitation of movement occur in the elbow of the children, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Numan Duman said, “We can say that when such a situation occurs, the family and the child are afraid, and the family is suspicious especially when it is broken. The child cannot pick up and hold any object with the affected hand, and does not want to put it in his mouth even if you give him candy or chocolate. The child does not want his hand to be held and moved.” used the phrases.

Only experienced physicians can detect

Stating that in such cases, frequent applications are made to the emergency department, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Numan Duman said, “Family and child are restless and uneasy. When x-ray is taken, the diagnosis of dislocation cannot be made because ossification is not completed at this age. In this case, experienced physicians immediately bring to mind the dislocation of the nanny's elbow. The elbow dislocation can be put into place with a simple snap-in maneuver. In the follow-up, the child can use his elbow as before.” said.

Has similar findings with elbow fracture

Expressing that nanny elbow dislocation is most often confused with elbow fractures, Orthopedic Specialist Assist. Assoc. Dr. Numan Duman said, “Elbow fractures are also common in this age group. Both elbow fracture and nanny elbow dislocation give similar findings. In order to separate the two diagnoses, an X-ray of the elbow must be taken and evaluated in detail. While the separation in the bone structures is clearly detected in the fracture, the x-ray appears normal in the nanny's elbow dislocation. he said.

If there are symptoms, they should not be neglected.

Emphasizing that children in the 2-5 age group should not be held by their hands, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Numan Duman said, “If the child has pain and limitation of movement after this situation, nanny elbow dislocation should come to mind. The elbow can be put in place with a very simple maneuver. If neglected, diagnosis and treatment will be delayed and it will be difficult to replace the elbow. It is often irreplaceable and can cause injury.” used the phrases.
