The Project to End the Flood Risk in Balçova Has Come to an End

Comprehensive studies initiated to prevent floods in Balçova Çetin Emeç and Eğitim neighborhoods, which were affected by heavy rains on February 2 last year, have come to an end. The works, with an investment cost of 2 million TL, will be completed within a year after the flood.

The flood prevention works initiated by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality İZSU General Directorate in Balçova in line with the resilient city target have come to an end. Within the scope of the project, which has a total investment cost of approximately 2 million TL, the section deficiencies that caused flooding in the 560-meter section of Hacı Ahmet Stream were eliminated. The capacity of the stream was increased by improving the existing stream rehabilitation structures.

“We have greatly reduced the flood risk in the region”

Civil Engineer Umut Yılmaz Deveci, who works at the İZSU Sewerage Department, stated that they carried out a serious survey and planning work in the region after the flood, and that the decisions about the project were made in line with the meetings held with the citizens living in the region before the work.

Cameleer; “We have come to the end of our comprehensive work that we have started to prevent our people from suffering in the region. After the investigations we made in Hacı Ahmet Creek, we worked on the 560-meter creek bed between Fethi Bey Street and Nazım Street in Çetin Emec Mahallesi, we renewed 3 road crossings as well as route and section widening works. From now on, we greatly reduce the risk of flooding in this region.” he said.

Works are completed on the anniversary of the flood

Stream rehabilitation, renewal and flood control works, which will minimize the flood risk in the region and increase the quality of life of the citizens, are completed on the anniversary of the flood disaster on February 2, 2021.
