According to the evaluation made on the data, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality İZSU General Directorate, which provides service with a total of 22 treatment plants, 39 of which are advanced biological treatment, 6 biological and 67 natural treatment plants, continued its pioneering role in this field. İzmir ranked first with the number of advanced biological wastewater treatment plants, the rate of wastewater treated in accordance with European Union Standards and the amount of wastewater treatment per capita.
The ratio of the number of people benefiting from wastewater treatment services in İzmir to the urban population reached 98,6 percent.

According to the statistics published biennially under the title of Environmental Statistics, 97,2% of the wastewater treated in İzmir is treated in accordance with European Union standards, while this figure is 96,2 percent in Bursa, 40,4 percent in Antalya, 39,1 percent in Istanbul. 18,8 and XNUMX percent in Ankara.
Leading city in the amount of wastewater treatment per capita
According to the study, which includes the wastewater treatment data of 399 municipalities in Turkey, İzmir ranked first among the five metropolitan cities in terms of the amount of advanced biological wastewater treatment per capita. While the amount of wastewater treated per capita in EU standards is 48,9 cubic meters per year in Bursa, 35,3 cubic meters per year in Istanbul, 35,3 cubic meters per year in Antalya and 6,6 cubic meters annually in Ankara, this value is 61,1 cubic meters annually in İzmir. in cubic meters.
Wastewater treatment in EU standards is 2,3 times higher than the Turkey average
Another fact revealed by TUIK data is that 12,2% of the wastewater treated in Turkey in accordance with European Union standards is treated in İzmir.
