Excise Tax Raise on Cigarettes and Alcohol! Has Cigarettes and Alcohol Been Raised?

With the announcement of the inflation data, the rate of increase in the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) taken from the cigarette and alcohol group became clear. Accordingly, the rate of increase in SCT for the products in question was 47,39 percent.

The weight of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products in the inflation basket is 4,87 percent. Only cigarettes make up 4,56% of this rate.

The specific tax on cigarettes, which was 0,4851 TL per pack, was increased to 0,7150 TL. While the minimum specific tax from 9,766 TL per package increased to 14,394 TL, this increase increased the minimum specific tax limit price from 15,50 TL to 22,85 TL per package. With an inflation update of 47,4 percent in cigarette taxes, the tax burden on the current average cigarette price will increase from 81 percent to about 96 percent. With this update, cigarette prices are expected to increase between 3 and 5 TL.

IS IT TIME FOR SMOKING?

It is expected that cigarette prices will be directly affected by this SCT increase. It is predicted that there will be an increase of 3 to 5 TL per package.

The weights of cigarettes and alcoholic beverages in the inflation basket for the last 5 years are as follows:

  • 2017 – 5,87 percent
  • 2018 – 5,14 percent
  • 2019 – 4,23 percent
  • 2020 – 6,06 percent
  • 2021 – 4,88 percent

The weights of the products in the Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco group separately in inflation are as follows:

  • Raki – 0,1065 percent
  • Whiskey – 0,0209 percent
  • Wine – 0,0264 Percent
  • Beer – 0,1572 percent
  • Cigarettes – 4,5656 Percent
