Common Mistakes in Reducing Kidney Stones

Esenler Medipol University Hospital, Department of Urology, Op. Dr. Nuh Aldemir said, “Kidney stone pain is one of the most severe pains known, and patients seek a solution to this problem right or wrong as soon as possible. Most of the herbs and liquids that are thought to be good for dropping stones, especially among the people, are due to the fact that the stone, which would normally fall anyway, attaches it to these substances it uses and tells the people around it.

Expressing that kidney stone disease is most common between the ages of 20 and 40, Op. from Esenler Medipol University Hospital Urology Department. Dr. Nuh Aldemir said, “The incidence decreases after the age of 40. Kidney stone pain is one of the most severe pains known, and patients often apply to the emergency room because of this pain. Because of this severe pain, people are looking for a solution to this problem right or wrong as soon as possible. Most of the herbs and liquids that are thought to be good for dropping stones, especially among the people, are due to the fact that the stone, which would normally fall anyway, attaches it to these substances it uses and tells the people around it. There are many well-known misconceptions about this among the public,” he added.

Pay attention to adequate water consumption

Aldemir said that although the exact cause of kidney stones is not known, factors related to nutrition are especially important and said, “The most important of these is insufficient water consumption. High intake of animal protein in the diet, plenty of salt (sodium consumption), excessive use of sugar, and excessive consumption of coffee or cocoa-like foods can also be counted among the reasons. Urinary tract infections, structural disorders in the kidney, some drugs and genetic factors can also be effective in stone formation. Due to all these reasons, some minerals in the urine cannot dissolve and accumulate, then these minerals combine to form crystals, and finally, these crystals combine to form stones. Calcium oxalate stones make up about 80 percent of kidney stones. In addition, stones due to infections, uric acid stones, cystine stones and calcium phosphate stones are also seen. The most common symptom of kidney stones is severe side and groin pain. In addition, nausea, vomiting, burning during urination, blood in the urine, frequent urination, difficulty in urination, fever, chills-chills are also among the symptoms.

Don't act on hearsay

Drawing attention to the mistakes that are claimed to have dropped the stone among the public, Aldemir concluded his words as follows:

“There is a misconception among the public that especially soda causes stones. In the study in which 2013 thousand people participated in 200, the participants were followed for 8 years, and it was found that coffee and tea could form low-risk stones. Again, in this study, soda with added sugar was found to be at high risk in terms of stone formation potential. Another blood is related to stinging nettle. In an experiment conducted in China in 2014, kidney stones were formed in rats and it was shown that the stones were reduced in rats fed with nettle, but no studies including human experiments were conducted afterwards. There is 1 study in the literature about dandelion. In a study conducted in Iran, it was found to reduce stone formation on rats, but no further studies were done”.
