Marmaray Hike Response from IMM to TCDD: If It's Too Sincere, It Can Even Get Free Transportation

Marmaray, a subordinate of TCDD under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, was increased by 36 percent. In the statement made by TCDD after the news of the hike, it was stated that the said increased tariff was put into effect unlawfully by the IMM, and that legal remedies would be applied regarding the issue. IMM is responsible for this statement of TCDD. SözcüThe response from Murat Ongun was not delayed. Ongun said, “If TCDD is very sincere, it can even provide free transportation. No one is holding your hand," he said.

Turkey entered the first day of the new year with successive hikes. In addition to the hikes in electricity, natural gas and bridges, another increase came to the Marmaray fees, which are affiliated with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

Marmaray full track fee increased from 8,91 to 12,12 lira, student fee from 4,03 to 5,48 lira, teacher/elderly fee from 6,21 to 8,45 lira.

The minimum, that is, the shortest transportation fee increased from 4,03 to 5.48 liras, from 1,96 to 2.67 liras for student-discounted, from 2,88 to 3.92 liras for teacher/elderly.

“IMPLEMENTED UNLAWFULLY”

After this hike announcement, a new statement was made by the Republic of Turkey State Railways (TCDD), which was on the agenda of social media. In the announcement, it was stated that the increase in question was made unlawfully by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

The full statement from TCDD is as follows;"

The increased tariff, which started to be applied on the Marmaray line as of 01.01.2022, was put into effect unlawfully by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality despite all the objections of our institution.

On August 2, 2021, all Public Transportation lines in Istanbul were increased by 15%, while Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality offered to raise the UKOME Board again after 5 months. On 16.12.2021, the 36% increase proposal brought by the IMM to the UKOME agenda was rejected by the UKOME Board as high.

On 24.12.2021, the offer of a 36% raise for all Public Transportation lines including IETT, Metrobus and Metro was brought to the agenda again by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, and the majority of the UKOME Board members, together with our TCDD representatives, found the raise offer high and a written annotation to make a 20,28% raise. has been placed.

However, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has put into effect the 36% increased tariff, which has no legal basis, despite the majority objection of the UKOME Board and the IMM officials notified verbally and in writing that the UKOME decision approved by the President, approved by our institution, cannot be implemented to us.

For UKOME decisions to take effect, the signature process of the members of UKOME member institutions must be completed and the decision must be approved by the Metropolitan Mayor.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, on the other hand, started to apply the tariff, which has not yet been signed and approved by the President, without sending it to UKOME Member organizations.

Before the signature process was completed and the President-approved decision was conveyed to our institution, the increased tariff was uploaded to the Marmaray turnstiles by the Municipality Company Belbim AŞ, despite the numerous consultations with the Municipality officials and our written objections and warnings so that the hike would not be loaded on the Marmaray line operated by our Corporation.

We respectfully announce to the public that we are not responsible for the enforcement of this 36% hike, which has not been approved by the UKOME Board and whose signature process has not been completed, on the Marmaray line operated by our Corporation, and that we will initiate the legal process as soon as possible.

“UPLOADED TO TURNSTILES BY MY BELB”

Before the signature process was completed and the President-approved decision was conveyed to our institution, the increased tariff was uploaded to the Marmaray turnstiles by the Municipality Company Belbim AŞ, despite the numerous consultations with the Municipality officials and our written objections and warnings so that the hike would not be loaded on the Marmaray line operated by our Corporation.

"LEGAL PROCESS WILL BE STARTED"

We respectfully announce to the public that we are not responsible for the enforcement of this 36% hike, which has not been approved by the UKOME Board and whose signature process has not been completed, on the Marmaray line operated by our Corporation, and that we will initiate the legal process as soon as possible.”
