50 Percent Increase Demand from the Intercity Road Passenger Transport Sector

Sector representatives are waiting for a raise in intercity road transport. The representatives, who are preparing to meet with the Ministry, demand a 50 percent increase and tax reduction.

With the rapid depreciation of the Turkish lira against the foreign currency, every item from needle to thread has increased. With the increase in fuel and road prices, companies engaged in intercity passenger transportation are preparing to meet with the Ministry of Transport for a raise request.

According to the news of Ali Can Polat from CumhuriyetWith the New Year, successive hikes in many items from electricity to fuel, from bridge tolls to motor vehicle tax began to affect everything from needle to thread. At the request of the airline companies, the ceiling fares for air tickets were increased from 499 TL to 599 TL, while companies engaged in intercity passenger transportation are next. Sector representatives said, "Immediate increase, as soon as one returns with the current costs." Sector representatives are preparing to meet with the Ministry of Transport to demand a 50 percent increase and VAT reduction.

Birol Özcan, President of the Turkish Bus Drivers Federation, reminded that all the main expenses of the sector had increased and said, "These hikes killed the sector."

“Will the diesel be 13 liras? Bridge fees have also increased a lot. Under these conditions, the wheel will not turn. If it goes on like this, most of our companies cannot see the end of the year. We have 337 companies, the end of the year will drop to 200. In order for the sector to survive, a raise of at least 50 percent is required. We have a meeting with the Ministry towards the end of January, we will convey our demands.”

THE PROBLEM OF UNFAIR COMPETITION

Mustafa Yıldırım, the head of the All Bus Drivers' Federation, said that they could not make a price change before the 4 months were up in accordance with the price schedule announced by the Ministry of Transport, and gave the following information:

“When this 4-month price tariff was announced, diesel was 7 liras, now it is 13. An update is needed urgently. We compete with the state-supported airline and rail, we also serve the citizens, why are there no tax refunds on fuel? Airline stole 100 million of our passengers in long distances, and high-speed trains stole distances such as Istanbul-Ankara. While discounts are applied to THY and TCDD, our industry is forced to use the most expensive routes.”

Yıldırım, who said that the members of the sector could not fully reflect the demand for a raise, stated that they expected an 18 percent increase and VAT reduction. Yıldırım also said, “There is no regular tax on the machine in any business line. Why do we regularly pay Motor Vehicle Tax every year to the buses we do business with?” he said.

CEILING WAGE INCREASED

Pegasus Airlines General Manager Mehmet Nane stated that they made a loss in flights over one hour in the aviation sector, and therefore the ceiling wage increase they demanded was realized. According to the increase made by the Ministry of Transport, the ceiling fee, which was 499 TL, became 599 TL.

The prices of the Sirkeci-Harem ferryboats connected to the Istanbul Sea Buses were also increased with the new year. In 2021, the car ferry boarding fee, which was 21 TL for automobiles and minivans, increased to 40 TL with an increase of approximately 29 percent. Passenger tickets increased from 8 TL to 10 TL with the increase. The fee taken from the Istanbul card has increased from 4.03 TL to 5.48 TL. The price of a ticket in the motors on the City Lines Islands Line was 23 TL. While Full Akbil was 15.64 TL, Island Card was 10.95 TL, student 7.82 TL. In TURYOL, the ticket price was 23 TL, while the student was 18 TL.
