Successful results can be obtained with early diagnosis and treatment in the problem of strabismus, which usually occurs in childhood. Eye Health and Diseases Specialist Assoc. Dr. İlke Bahçeci Şimşek gave important warnings.

Strabismus is a problem that usually occurs within the first year of life. Stating that strabismus can also occur due to paralysis of the muscles that move the eyes in advanced ages, apart from childhood, Eye Health and Diseases Specialist Assoc. Dr. İlke Bahçeci Şimşek, in addition to these, pointed out that strabismus may occur as the first symptom of thyroid diseases, various muscle diseases and sometimes tumors.

EYE EXAMINATION IS REQUIRED UP TO 3 YEARS OLD!

Explaining that the eye shifts seen in childhood are mostly inward, while those in adulthood are outward, Yeditepe University Hospitals Eye Health and Diseases Specialist Assoc. Dr. İlke Bahçeci Şimşek said, “Everyone who has a complaint of inward or outward shift or double vision should have a detailed examination by an ophthalmologist.” However, pointing out that all children should be checked by an ophthalmologist before the age of 3, Assoc. Dr. Şimşek warned that if there is a family history of strabismus, the examination should be done before the age of 1. Stating that various measurements related to gliding were made with prisms during the said routine eye examination, Assoc. Dr. Şimşek continued his words by saying that occult eye disorders are also evaluated by instillation of drops and continued his words as follows: "Fundus examination - fundoscopy, also called fundus examination, taking the name of the anatomical region examined in the medical literature, is performed, and the intraocular mass, which may cause decreased vision and thus shift in the retina, can cause different retinal detachment. diseases are detected. Sometimes there may be a need for MRI of the orbit or brain.”

“3D VISION LOSS CAN BE EXPERIENCED IF TREATMENT IS DELAYED”

Explaining that in strabismus, if the two eyes cannot be used together, it will result in the loss of the brain's ability to combine the images of the two eyes, Assoc. Dr. İlke Bahçeci Şimşek, “Even if the slippage is corrected in the future, the person uses his/her eyes separately. Unfortunately, the ability to see with both eyes, called binocular vision, cannot develop. Failure to develop binocular vision may lead to the absence of 3-dimensional vision and the inability to determine distance.

IT ALSO HAS AESTHETIC AND PSYCHOLOGICAL DIMENSIONS

Pointing out that strabismus has an aesthetic and psychological aspect that should never be neglected, Assoc. Dr. İlke Bahçeci Şimşek emphasized that strabismus affects the psychology of the person negatively and that this problem should be solved by early diagnosis and before the children reach school age. Yeditepe University Hospitals Eye Health and Diseases Specialist Assoc. Dr. İlke Bahçeci Şimşek concluded her words as follows. “Slipped eyes are primarily treated with glasses and closure of one eye. A significant part of the slips can be treated with these two simple methods. Eye drift that is not treated with these methods should be operated without delay. Although surgery cannot eliminate all problems with slippage, it provides significant improvement.”
