Hüsn-i Hat was included in the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List!

“Hüsn-i Calligraphy” was declared the common heritage of humanity by UNESCO. Thus, the number of elements registered by Turkey on the Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists and declared as the common heritage of humanity rose to 21.

"Hüsn-i Hat", one of the Turkish decorative arts, was put on the agenda at the 16th Intergovernmental Committee Meeting of the United Nations Educational Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO), which was held online this year due to the global coronavirus epidemic.

“Hüsn-i Calligraphy”, which was nominated on behalf of Turkey with the file prepared by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, was recorded on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List of Humanity in today's session of the meeting that started on 13 December.

Until today, Turkey has been known for its "Meddahlik", "Mevlevi Sema Ceremony", "Minstrelsy Tradition", "Nevruz (Multinational)", "Karagöz", "Traditional Sohbet Meetings”, “Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival”, “Alevi-Bektashi Ritual: Whirling Dervish”, “Ceremonial Cheesecake Tradition”, “Mesir Paste Festival”, “Turkish Coffee Culture and Tradition”, “Marbling: Turkish Paper Decoration Art”, “Traditional Tile Mastery”, “The Culture of Baking and Sharing Fine Bread (Multinational)”, “Spring Celebration: Hıdrellez (Multinational)”, “The Language of Whistling”, “The Legacy of Dede Korkut: Epic Culture, Folk Tales and Music”, “Traditional Turkish Archery”, “Traditional Intelligence and Strategy Game: Mangala” and “Miniature Art” were registered in the Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists.

Now, there are “Tea Culture”, “Traditional Ahlat Stonework”, “Tradition of Telling Nasreddin Hodja Jokes” and “Silk Insectivory and Traditional Production of Silk for Weaving”. These files will also be evaluated by UNESCO in the 2022 cycle.

Turkey, which is among the top 5 countries to register the most items on the Cultural Heritage Lists and has been a member of the Intergovernmental Committee of the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage twice, is shown as one of the exemplary countries in the eyes of UNESCO with its work in the field of intangible cultural heritage.

The 16th UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee Meeting will end on 18 December and 180 committee members selected from 24 countries will examine the application files from 45 countries during the meeting.
