Prof. from Medipol Mega University Hospital, Department of Otorhinolaryngology. Dr. Tolga Kandoğan stated that if hoarseness persists for a period of 2 weeks, a specialist should be consulted.

Prof. from Medipol Mega University Hospital, Department of Otorhinolaryngology. Dr. Tolga Kandoğan said, “Hoarseness should not be taken lightly. In its most common form, hoarseness often accompanies the signs of upper respiratory tract infection. If this situation continues for 2 to 3 weeks, it may be a sign of diseases such as larynx, pharynx and esophagus cancer.

Stating that prolonged hoarseness can be a sign of some serious health problems, Prof. Dr. Tolga Kandoğan, “The most common form of hoarseness often accompanies the signs of upper respiratory tract infection. In addition to complaints such as sore throat, nasal congestion, and weakness, the person may experience hoarseness, and this complaint will pass in a short time together with other findings. However, if the patient's complaint of hoarseness lasts for a long time, then the patient's larynx should be viewed and evaluated with an endoscope by an ENT doctor," he added.

“Reflux and nodules also affect the voice”

Pointing out that there are some serious health problems underlying prolonged hoarseness and that this problem is caught early, the chance of treatment increases. Dr. Kandogan concluded his words as follows;

“Hoarseness may be due to simple respiratory tract infections, reflux, nodules and polyps developing on the vocal cords due to poor use of the voice, as well as rapid initiation of treatment such as cancer of the larynx, pharynx and esophagus, which prevents the vocal cords from working properly and causes paralysis in the vocal cords. It may be a sign of certain diseases. It should be known that the cancers of this region, that is, the cancers in the group that we call head and neck cancers in general, are cancers that have a very high chance of treatment when detected in the early period, and therefore, patients should be evaluated by an ENT specialist in cases of hoarseness lasting longer than 2 weeks.
