The European Union supported 'USABLE' project aims to produce biodegradable packaging from biological waste. The Protection Group of Companies, which is involved in the project in which 11 countries, including Turkey, participated, will be the first user in our country of packaging that is produced from food waste and can be degraded in nature.

The USABLE* project, which emerged with the idea of ​​developing sustainable and biodegradable packaging, continues its research with 11 partners from 25 countries, including Turkey. The product target of the project, which aims to develop high-performance bio-alternatives against plastic packaging by using food by-products as raw materials, has been achieved.

Conservation Chlorine Alkali, which will be the first in our country to use the biodegradable packaging developed by the USABLE project, will contribute to the recycling of food waste, reduce its carbon footprint and allow its packaging to dissolve.

STRONG PACKAGING FROM BY-PRODUCTS USED IN PASTA PRODUCTION

The project, in which Protection Chlorine Alkali, a subsidiary of the Preservation Group of Companies, is the end user, will convert raw materials such as food residues and biogenic CO2, which are low-cost and widely available by-products of the food industry, into polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), that is, bio-plastic, using microbial cultures. It can be used in high-strength bio-plastic packaging.

Baran Öneren, Deputy Director of R&D for Conservation Chlorine Alkali, listing the main objectives of the project, said, “The USABLE project, which started in 2019, aimed to create bio-packaging solutions to meet a wide range of packaging needs for food, beverage, medicine and clothing, recycling residues and biogenic CO2 into compostable (organic decomposable) and recyclable bio-packaging by processes with low environmental footprint, functionalizing and optimizing PHA (bio-plastic) to meet packaging end-use requirements, complex packaging including multi-layer films It is to obtain bio-based, biodegradable products that enable the realization of their structures and to reduce the environmental footprint of the plastic packaging industry”.

İbrahim Araci, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Protection Group, which is the end user of the project, emphasized the importance of the Green Consensus Agreement for companies exporting to the European Union and said, “Green Agreement, which sets the target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 percent by 1990 compared to 55 The Treaty increased its importance after we became a party to the Paris Climate Agreement. If our companies exporting to the European Union do not reduce their carbon footprints, the carbon tax to be applied carries significant risks. We must accelerate the green transformation in order to sustain our competition in the market and to leave a livable world to future generations. Our participation in the USABLE project is a part of our green transformation, as the Protection Group of Companies, we owe more to our country and to our world.”
