Classical Turkish music artist, performer and composer Prof. Dr. Alaeddin Slowly passed away. The 95-year-old master artist had been receiving treatment for organ failure for some time.

Who is Alaeddin Slowly?

Mehmet Alaettin Yavaşca, (born March 1, 1926, Kilis – died December 23, 2021), Turkish medical doctor and classical Turkish music artist.

She graduated from Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1951 and started her professional career as the 1st Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Haseki Hospital. He worked as the Chief Physician of Haseki Hospital, starting from 1985 until 1990, when he left his position as a physician.

prof. Dr. Alâeddin Yavaşca's musical life started with Western music violin lessons when he was only 8 years old. After going to Istanbul, Sadettin Kaynak, Münir Nurettin Selçuk, Dr. Suphi Ezgi, Hüseyin Sadeddin Arel, Zeki Arif Ataergin, Nuri Halil Poyraz, Refik Fersan, Mesut Cemil, Ekrem Karadeniz, Süleyman Ergüner, Dr. He benefited from masters such as Selahaddin Tanur, developed his performing skills and musical knowledge in institutions such as Istanbul Municipality Conservatory Advanced Turkish Music Conservatory, Istanbul University Choir, and won the exam in 1950 and became a soloist in Istanbul Radio, and over time he was a member of the Advisory, Supervision and Repertory boards at Turkish Radios and TRT. He has taken important roles and since 1967, he has been a choir director as well as a soloist.

He was among the founders of the first State Conservatory of Turkish Music, and since 1976 he has worked on the Board of Directors and teaching staff of the Turkish Music State Conservatory. After the Conservatory was affiliated to Istanbul Technical University with the law of YÖK (Higher Education Council), he was appointed as a Professor of Turkish Music State Conservatory at ITU in 1990 and was appointed as the Head of the Voice Education Department. He is also the teacher of successful Turkish classical music artists of the young generation such as Onur Akay, Bekir Ünlüataer and Umut Akyürek.

In addition to performing, he has around 140 compositions, semai, songs, children's songs, various instrumental works (peşrev, saz semai, medhal, etud), and in the religious field, he has compositions in the form of Mevlevi rituals and hymns.

He has given many concerts at home and abroad since the 1950s. He was invited to the United States twice for concerts abroad and gave 5 concerts. In 1988, he was invited to the "Music Festival" organized by the BBC in London's Queen Elizabeth Hall, and he gave 3 concerts there, as well as various concerts in Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg and Aachen in Germany. Dr. Alaeddin Yavaşca has one long player (LP), 25 pieces of 78 records and 15 pieces of 45 records.

He was given the title of 'State Artist' in 1991. He is married to Ayten Yavaşca. The artist's name was given to the ferry that sails in the Bosphorus by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in 2018. prof. Dr. Alaeddin Yavaşca Ferry continues its voyages on the Istanbul Bosphorus line. In addition, the historical house where Yavaşca was born and raised in Kilis has been transformed into a museum with the name “Alaeddin Yavaşca Museum House”.
