Turkey's First Large Cavitation Tunnel Opened

Turkey's first large cavitation tunnel and maneuvering test system, President of the Presidency of Defense Industry Prof. Dr. It was opened with a ceremony attended by İsmail Demir. Cavitation Tunnel and Maneuver Experiment for Improving the Hydro-Acoustic Characteristics of Turkish Warships carried out by Istanbul Technical University (ITU), ITUNOVA and ARI Teknokent as a Technology Acquisition Obligation Project of ADIK Shipyard and ASELSAN, supported by the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB). System (KATMANSIS) opening ceremony was held at ITU Ayazaga Campus, Faculty of Naval Architecture and Marine Sciences.

At the opening, President of the Presidency of Defense Industry Prof. Dr. İsmail Demir, Rector of ITU Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu, TRtest General Manager Bilal Aktaş and guests took part.

Speaking here, President of the Presidency of Defense Industry Prof. Dr. İsmail Demir, emphasizing the importance of these systems for Turkey, said, “This tunnel will make Turkey an important player in the world.” said.

President Prof. Dr. Expressing that the tunnel will be used for testing defense industry products, İsmail Demir said, “This tunnel is an important experimental capability in our shipbuilding projects, torpedo projects, submarine projects, during the tests of our newly designed submarines, propellers and torpedoes, testing the designs here and producing new technologies. provides.” used the phrases.

Noting that torpedoes can also be tested in the system in question, he continued as follows:

“For example, our Orka torpedo, Akya torpedo, various models of our new type of submarine and our new designs will be tested here. After analyzing their propellers, their rotation at various speeds and the performance of these ships at sea, tests will be conducted here. It will be a very important step not only for our defense industry, but also for our shipping industry to make more advanced designs and produce more performance products.”

President of Defense Industry Prof. Dr. İsmail Demir, drawing attention to the role of public, private sector and university cooperation in the construction of the tunnel, said, “This issue is a technology achievement realized with the cooperation of the university, industry and our Presidency. It will also form an important element of our national technology move.” he said.

Emphasizing that the tunnel is one of the leading tunnels in its field when compared to its examples in the world, Chairman Demir said, “This cavitation tunnel has become one of the top 6 tunnels in the world in terms of flow rate. It is quite advanced in terms of speed. This will again make Turkey an important player in the world.” made its assessment.

Head of Defense Industry Prof. Dr. İsmail Demir stated that the Turkish Defense Industry has drawn attention with its breakthroughs in recent years and said, “Our defense industry is leading the way in placing the concept of domestic and national on our country's agenda even more.” he said.

The tunnel will serve the shipbuilding industry, especially the defense industry.

According to the information obtained at the meeting, the large-scale cavitation tunnel established within ITU is an experimental facility that can serve the shipbuilding industry, especially the defense industry, and enable high-level scientific research.

The facility in question is designed to be able to be operated with low noise levels, which is important in terms of striking and stopping power performance of surface warships and submarines, both in fast and quiet cruising, sonar dome-hull integration, form optimization to ensure the uniformity of the axial velocity coming to the propeller disc, and to reduce cavitation. was established to perform performance and cavitation tests of large-sized model propellers and other propulsion vehicles in uniform flow, serving special propeller design and similar purposes.

Performance and cavitation tests of large-size model propellers and other propulsion vehicles behind the hull model (including the rudder) or in simulated flow, and tests of flow characteristics, noise trace and resistance around torpedoes/submarines or similar objects can also be carried out at the facility.
