The construction of the foundation plate of the pump station of the 1st power unit of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGS), which is under construction in Mersin, has begun. Within the scope of the works in which approximately 400 people participated, the reinforcement and assembly works of the formwork continue at the facility.
The pumping station, which is a building complex designed to supply sea water to the main technological workshops of the nuclear power plant, is a part of the modern high-tech system of hydraulic shore structures of Akkuyu NPP. A total of 4 pumping stations will be built, one for each power unit of the power plant.
The depth of laying of the foundation plate of the pumping station is 16,5 meters below sea level. The construction is carried out under the protection of 1 meter thick concrete diaphragms, the walls of which are reliably held by 3 rows of special fasteners (anchor connections) in order to withstand the pressure of sea water. On the walls of the diaphragms, there are 128 rows of connections, each of which is 3. In total, there are 384 anchor connections. While the height of the aboveground part of the station building exceeds 11 meters, the main technological equipment and water intake part will be placed underground.
Speaking on the subject, Sergei Butckikh, First Deputy General Manager of AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş and Director of NGS Construction Works, said: “The excavation work for the pumping station of the 1st unit started in December last year. Before starting the construction pit, a series of preparatory work was carried out. These were the filling of the water area, the construction of the perimeter walls, the creation of the sea fill to protect it from storms. Afterwards, a foundation pit with a depth of 22 meters was dug and a foundation was laid in the form of a concrete floor down to the level of -16,5 m. Now we proceed from the preparatory stage to the direct construction of the pumping station. Approximately 30 thousand cubic meters of concrete will be poured on the foundation plate of the building. In terms of the difficulty of construction, the plant is comparable to the construction of a small hydroelectric power station. Therefore, the elaboration of the pump station project required serious efforts of a team of qualified Russian and Turkish engineers. The construction is carried out using the most advanced technologies.”
The construction of the foundation plate of the pumping station of the 2nd power unit of Akkuyu NPP will begin at the beginning of next year. At the same point, a complex-configured water line for the main cooling pumps will also be laid. For this process, a special mold will be used to ensure that the job is done with the required accuracy.
The preparations for the construction of the pumping station for the 3rd and 4th power units of Akkuyu NPP continue.
