The North African country of Tunisia announced that the first case of the Omicron variant, which is thought to have spread through the Republic of South Africa, was seen in a passenger traveling to the country from Turkey. From Tunisia's Covid-19 board, Dr. Hachemi Louzer announced that the first Omicron case in the country was detected in a Congolese passenger going from Istanbul Airport to Tunisia.
It was stated that the 23-year-old citizen of the Democratic Republic of Congo was positive in the test performed at Tunis International Airport, where he flew from Istanbul on Friday, and an Omicron variant was detected in the examinations carried out at the Pasteur Public Health Institute. Louzer said that passengers traveling with this person, including his brother, were quarantined despite being negative.
Tunisian health authorities had imposed some travel restrictions due to the Omicron variant, which was first seen in Botswana and spread around the world from people traveling to South Africa. In the country, which was also the scene of political turmoil due to the corona virus epidemic, vaccination had accelerated in the last two months. To date, 25 people have died from Covid in Tunisia.
