The study, in which Near East University researchers evaluated the performances of 48 different antibody tests, which were given emergency use permission by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), received the best oral presentation award from the European Biotechnology Congress.

Antibody tests, which are widely used as a complementary approach to the PCR test, which is used as the gold standard in the diagnosis of COVID-19, play an important role in identifying people who are not diagnosed, especially because they have survived the disease without showing symptoms or mildly. It is also widely used to measure post-vaccination immune response. The number of antibody tests used for this purpose around the world is approaching 50. So how effective is the performance of which antibody test?

The study, in which Near East University researchers sought the answer to this question by evaluating the performance of 48 different antibody tests, which were given emergency use permission by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), received the best oral presentation award from the European Biotechnology Congress.

prof. Dr. Tamer Sanlidag, Prof. Dr. Murat Sayan, Assoc. Dr. Dilber Uzun Özşahin, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Ayşe Arıkan and Assist. Assoc. Dr. Berna Uzun's research titled “Ranking of Diagnostic SARS-CoV -2 IgG Antibody Tests by Using Multi-criteria Decision-Making Theory” This was done using the MCDM theory.

In the study carried out, the properties of the antibody kits were obtained from the Food and Drug Administration-FDA and analyzed using the Multi-Criteria Decision Theory method. In the comparison of antibody tests, analytical sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, sample type used, test technique, antigen target (spike or nucleocapsid), time to result, storage conditions of reagents, applicability were evaluated. In the study, which was carried out by evaluating many criteria simultaneously with the Multi-Criteria Decision Theory method, the most suitable and most successful antibody kits were determined and reported.

Near East University Acting Rector Prof., who also signed the work that received the best oral presentation award from the European Biotechnology Congress. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ emphasized the importance of multidisciplinary studies in the advancement of science. Stating that his award-winning work brings together experts from different fields such as mathematics, biotechnology and artificial intelligence, Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ said, “With our multidisciplinary study, we have evaluated the performance of antibody kits in use around the world and created an important guide for scientists in the fight against COVID-19.”

Assoc. Dr. Dilber Uzun Özşahin: “Near East University is one of the first universities in the world that can apply the theory of multi-criteria decision making in the field of health.”

Presenting his award-winning work with researchers from the Near East University at the European Biotechnology Congress, Assoc. Dilber Uzun Özşahin said that they used multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) theory in their studies to determine the diagnostic feasibility of different antibody platforms used for diagnostic and epidemiological research. Stating that this method can be applied in very few universities in the world, Assoc. Özşahin emphasized that Near East University is one of the first universities to apply the theory of multi-criteria decision making.
