In line with the vision of “Izmir in harmony with nature” of Tunç Soyer, the Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, a Bird Watching Walk is organized in the Gediz Delta, which is under risk with the pressure of urbanization and the threat of construction. We will meet in front of Kaklıç Junction Bus Stop for the walk to be held on 18 December at 13.00 in cooperation with Doğa Derneği. With the event in the delta, which is among the most important natural areas of Turkey, it is aimed for the people of İzmir to witness the life in the region, to observe flamingos, pelicans and many different species.

At the Bird Watching Walk event, the Nature Association team will give information about the Gediz Delta. Then, the birds and life in the Gediz Delta will be closely watched with the help of telescopes and binoculars. For contact and information, you can visit Kurs@dogadernegi.org.

“The relationship of the people of Izmir with the delta should be strengthened”

Referring to the importance of strengthening the relations of the people of Izmir with Gediz, Mayor Tunç Soyer said, “We want to ensure that the Gediz Delta, which starts from Mavişehir and stretches from the Sasalı shores to the Foça hills, has a more place in the lives of the people of Izmir. Home to ten percent of the world's flamingo population and 300 bird species are observed, the delta is one of the rare wetlands on earth within the metropolitan area. Even though it is protected by national and international laws, it is our duty to protect Gediz, which is among the endangered natural areas.”

Izmir in harmony with nature

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, which has made an official candidacy application for the Gediz Delta to be included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Tentative List, continues its 35 Living Park project in order to bring the people of Izmir to an urban life integrated with nature and forests. At the same time, the Metropolitan Municipality creates green corridors that uninterruptedly connect the city center to natural areas with the routes of IzMiras.
