More than 5 Million Vehicles Used the Eurasia Tunnel in 77 Years

Over 5 million vehicles have used the Eurasia Tunnel in the 77 years since its opening.

It has been 5 years since the opening of the Eurasia Tunnel, which connects the Asian and European continents by land under the seabed, and was put into service with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Prime Minister of the time, Binali Yıldırım, and many foreign guests.

The tunnel, which was implemented with the aim of producing a radical solution to the transportation problem of Istanbul and reducing the distance between the two sides of Istanbul to 15 minutes, contributed to the relief of traffic in the region as an alternative to the Bosphorus crossings between the European and Anatolian sides.

The 5,4-kilometer section of the tunnel, which is the product of advanced design, technology and engineering applications, was built 106 meters below the sea with a special method.

Eurasia Tunnel

The Eurasia tunnel or the Bosphorus Highway Tube Crossing Project is a highway tunnel that connects the Asian and European sides, whose foundation was laid on February 26, 2011, under the sea floor on the route of Kumkapı on Kennedy Caddesi and Koşuyolu on the D-100 Highway and allows the passage of the Bosphorus. The total route is 14,6 kilometers with tunnels and connection roads. It is aimed to reduce the travel time from Kumkapı to Koşuyolu from 100 minutes in heavy traffic to 5 minutes.

In order to provide an alternative highway crossing with three bridges and a car ferry across the Bosphorus, the project, which was built 1,2 kilometers south of Marmaray, is expected to provide a more balanced urban transportation to Istanbul by sharing the traffic loads of the existing three bridges and the car ferry. . It is the second undersea tunnel in Istanbul after the Marmaray tube passage. Although the toll fee of the tunnel is charged in two directions; For 2017, it was ₺16,60 for cars and ₺24,90 for minibuses. With the increase in 2020, the toll fee was 36,40 TL for cars and 54,70 TL for minibuses. It was stated that the name of the tunnel would be determined by public voting by government officials, and it was requested to vote from its official address until 10 December. However, on 11 December, the authorities did not disclose the voting result on the website and did not share it on the grounds that the issue was distorted. The name of the tunnel was not changed and the tunnel was opened on 20 December under the same name as “Eurasia Tunnel”.

The Eurasia Tunnel Project (Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project) connects Asian and European sides with a road tunnel passing under the sea floor. The Avrasya Tunnel, which serves in Kazlıçeşme-Göztepe line where there is a heavy traffic in Istanbul, covers a total of 14,6 kilometers.

The 5,4 kilometer section of the project consists of a two-storey tunnel constructed with a special technology under the sea floor and connection tunnels constructed with other methods, while road expansion and improvement works were carried out on a total of 9,2 kilometers in Europe and Asia. The approach roads between Sarayburnu-Kazlıçeşme and Harem-Göztepe were expanded and intersections, car underpasses and pedestrian overpasses were built.

Tunnel passage and road improvement-expansion work, a holistic structure that relieves vehicle traffic. While the journey time in Istanbul is very heavy, the journey time is significantly reduced, and it is possible to experience the privilege of a safe and comfortable journey. It also contributes to the reduction of environmental and noise pollution.
