Mecidiyeköy Metro Station Reopens

The manufacturing error between the first 2016 stations of the Mecidiyeköy Mahmutbey Metro built in 2 was fixed by working day and night. Mecidiyeköy Station will be put into service again on Monday, December 20, following the rapidly completed test work.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) opened the Mecidiyeköy – Mahmutbey Metro, which has 18 km and 15 stations, for which the test studies have been completed, on 28 October 2020. However, during the expedition on April 7, 2021, it was determined that swelling occurred in the truss area between Mecidiyeköy and Çağlayan stations, the geometry of the line was disrupted, the walking paths were damaged, and intense water flow started from the region.

In the examination of the IMM team with the academicians of Istanbul Technical University; It was determined that during the construction of the tunnel, the reinforced concrete production of which was completed by the contractor company in 2016, adequate ground investigation was not carried out, adequate drainage and isolation measures were not taken against the water problems encountered during the production, the design and production were not appropriate, and there was a structural weakness in the reinforced concrete structure for all these reasons.

Upon these determinations, IMM immediately closed the section between Mecidiyeköy and Çağlayan stations, which poses a risk for the citizens, to operation. Mecidiyeköy – Mahmutbey Metro continued to serve from Çağlayan Station. In order to relieve the grievances of Istanbul residents, free IETT bus services were launched between Mecidiyeköy and Nurtepe stations.

The contractor company responsible for the construction was immediately invited, and in this process, all defective reinforced concrete productions in the tunnel were cut and removed by breaking. The structural design was revised and the reinforced concrete fabrications in the defective area were redone. Then the rails were laid again and the electromechanical assemblies were completed. By repeating the signal tests, test drives and certification process between the first 2 stations, the metro was made ready for safe use.

All these transactions were made by the contractor and IMM did not make any expenditure. The material damage caused by the loss of passengers of Metro Istanbul and the transportation of passengers by buses will also be compensated from the contractor.

The part of the metro between the reconstructed Mecidiyeköy and Çağlayan stations and the closed Mecidiyeköy Station will be opened again on Monday, 20 December at 06:00.

İBB would like to thank the people of Istanbul who have been patiently waiting for this process that has exceeded 8 months, and wish them a good journey.
