A study was carried out to determine the strategies for reducing the amount of emissions by calculating the Greenhouse Gas Emission Amounts generated in the campus area of ​​GTU.

Dr. In the graduation project carried out by Orhan SEVİMOĞLU and Environmental Engineering Department Student Nurhan EMLİK, a study called “Calculation of Greenhouse Gas Emission Amounts in Gebze Technical University Campus Area and Determination of Reduction Strategies” was carried out. In this context, the total greenhouse gas emissions of the university for the years 2018, 2019 and 2020 were calculated. The greenhouse gas emissions of the university were analyzed in three different contexts. In the first scope, the consumption of natural gas burned in the boilers for the heating of the buildings in the GTU campus and the use of hot water, the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the amount of fuel consumed at the campus boundaries were examined, while the greenhouse gas emissions arising from the total electrical energy consumption in the buildings in the campus area were discussed in the second scope. In the last and third scope, the water consumption within the campus borders, the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the fuel consumption of the vehicles used by the university staff and students for daily transportation and the vehicles rented by the university, as well as the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the waste created by the staff and students within the campus. took.

Defra-Annex 2018, 2018 and 2019 calculation criteria were used in the study, in which 2020 was chosen as the base year. Greenhouse gas emissions were calculated without Marmaray in 2018. With the commissioning of Marmaray in 2019, greenhouse gas emissions due to the effect of public transportation were calculated. In 2020, greenhouse gas emission was determined with the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the total greenhouse gas emission for 2018 was found to be 10666 tCO2e. First scope emissions accounted for 8% of this emission, second scope emissions for 32% and third scope emissions for 60%.

For 2019, the total greenhouse gas emission was found to be 10648 tCO2e. 10% of this emission was first scope emissions, 34% was second scope emissions and 56% was third scope emissions. The 4% decrease in the third scope emissions was recorded as a result of the commissioning of the Marmaray line in March 2019.

For 2020, the total greenhouse gas emission was found to be 5825 tCO2e. The reason for this large decrease was the introduction of distance education due to the coronavirus pandemic. Within this year, first scope emissions accounted for 12%, second scope emissions for 52%, and third scope emissions for 32%.
