It is applied in patients who cannot have reflux surgery and do not want to have it. Endoscopic new method in the treatment of reflux; with this method, “stomach lid is stapled”

Reflux is a very common disease nowadays. It is stated that one out of every 5 people in our country is struggling with this disease. Reflux; While it affects our work, family and social life negatively due to problems such as burning in the chest, bloating in the abdomen, mouthing food or bitter water, cough attacks that usually start at night can make us sleepless! Although the symptoms can be controlled with drugs in some of the patients who experience these complaints, surgery may be needed in approximately 10-40 percent of the patients as the symptoms continue. However, some patients cannot or do not want to have surgery for medical reasons. A new endoscopic method has been developed for these patients; plication, which is a kind of stapling of the stomach cover! Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. from Acıbadem University Atakent Hospital. Dr. Fatih Oğuz Önder and Gastroenterology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Hakan Yıldız gave information about this method, which has just started to be implemented in our country.

Today, in the treatment of reflux disease; drugs and endoscopic or surgical methods are used. However, while drugs that require long-term use cannot provide a solution to the underlying pathology, various complications may occur after surgery. Because of the problems experienced in both methods, 'endoscopic' methods are gaining more and more importance in the treatment of reflux disease. One of the endoscopic methods applied in Europe and America in recent years is the 'plication' method, which eliminates reflux symptoms without the need for drugs and surgery! Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. Dr. Fatih Oğuz Önder, stating that the 'plication' method, which has been started to be applied in our country, is preferred in patients who do not want to use drugs for a long time, who cannot undergo surgery for medical reasons or who do not prefer to have an operation, and says, "With this method, it is possible to get rid of reflux symptoms without the need for surgery, and the use of reflux medicine ends." .

If medication and surgery are not preferred…

The first step in the treatment of reflux is usually drugs that suppress stomach acid and lifestyle adjustments. However, although drug therapy relieves patients, it cannot offer a definitive solution to reflux. For this reason, surgical intervention may be required in cases where reflux drugs do not help, in those who do not prefer drug therapy for years, in patients with advanced gastric hernia with reflux. Gastroenterology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Hakan Yıldız states that although the success rates of reflux surgeries are higher than drug treatment today, various complications such as scar formation in the incision areas may develop in some patients, and says, "Therefore, 'endoscopic' methods, which are interventional procedures, are more preferred in the treatment of reflux."

The 'plication' method to the gastric valve

Reflux; It develops due to the looseness of the valve, which is located in the part where the esophagus meets the stomach and prevents the gastric fluid from escaping back. The plication method that has been used in our country for a while; It is based on the principle of tightening the looseness in the lid, which prevents gastric juice from escaping into the esophagus and mouth, by a process called 'stapling'. Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. Dr. Fatih Oğuz Önder explains the method, which is performed under general anesthesia in the operating room environment and is completed in an average of 45 minutes: “Plication is an endoscopic method. The plication device is left in the stomach with a guide wire sent to the stomach. Then, the lower esophageal sphincter is compressed by 'stapling' with maneuvers made with the gastroscope, offering a solution to the problem of reflux of nutrients. After this method, the patient does not need to use medication.

Return to normal life on the same day!

Since the plication method is not a surgical procedure, patients can return to their daily lives after being under observation for 6 hours. For the same reason, side effects do not occur after the procedure, only some patients may develop temporary chest pain. Gastroenterology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Hakan Yıldız states that this method can be applied again in cases where reflux disease recurs.

If you have these complaints, beware!
