Cooperation Protocol Signed for Aegean Gastronomy Project

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality signed a cooperation protocol with İzmir Commodity Exchange for the Aegean Gastronomy project. President speaking at the signing ceremony Tunç Soyer“It will be an important project in which we document and understand the ancient agricultural and food culture of the Aegean and share it with the world again for the preservation of this culture. It will complete the vision of Izmir's Cittaslow Metropol and will accompany the development of our Terra Madre Anadolu fair, the first of which will be held in September 2022.”

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer, Izmir Commodity Exchange Chairman of the Board of Directors Işınsu Kestelli signed a cooperation protocol for the establishment of a center related to Aegean Gastronomy. Speaking at the signing ceremony of the project, which is aimed to be a center of attraction in the national and international gastronomy arena and will be implemented in the historical Stock Exchange Palace, the President Tunç Soyer “Gastronomy for İzmir is not just a practice in the kitchen and between the table. We start the production of healthy and delicious food in the Aegean when the seed meets the soil and water. It is not possible to make a delicious meal from food that poisons the soil, consumes water resources and exploits the labor of the producer. For this reason, we see the starting point of İzmir gastronomy as the struggle against poverty and drought in agriculture. This project, in which we cooperate with the Izmir Commodity Exchange, will be an important center where we document and understand the ancient agricultural and food culture of the Aegean and share it with the world again for the preservation of this culture. It will complete the vision of Izmir's Cittaslow Metropol and will accompany the development of our Terra Madre Anadolu fair, the first of which will be held in September 2022.”

Soyer: “It will be the window of Aegean agriculture to the world”

Emphasizing that İzmir Agriculture, which was born from the vision of “Another Agriculture is Possible” and whose basis is the support of small producers and local seeds, will live in this center and be promoted to the world, Mayor Soyer continued his words as follows: “This will be the window of thousands of years of Aegean agriculture to the world. It will connect the countryside and the city centre, moreover, our past and our future. As our planet experiences the climate crisis, it will multiply the wisdom of the past to find solutions to the problems of the future. The realization of this project under the roof of the historical Stock Exchange Building, which has become the center of agricultural trade in our city and one of the symbols of Izmir, carries a special meaning. I would like to thank the managers and team of the Izmir Commodity Exchange for establishing such a valuable union of power with the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality.”

Kestelli: “It will combine thousands of years of culinary culture with a rich agricultural production pattern”

Stating that they aim to make İzmir and the Aegean Region one of the few gastronomic destinations in the world with a project to be carried out with a very wide concept from production to branding, from education to promotional activities, İzmir Commodity Exchange Board Chairman Işınsu Kestelli said, “With our project, the Aegean Region is rich with thousands of years of life and culinary culture. We aim to introduce the agricultural production pattern to the world by truly integrating it. Supporting Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and the Mayor Tunç Soyer"I thank you," he said.

Talking about the historical Stock Exchange Palace, which will be the center of the project and one of the application areas, Işınsu Kestelli said, “Our historical Stock Exchange Palace has a very important place among the monuments of İzmir. With the effect of the earthquake we experienced last year, the strengthening and restoration of our building has become a necessity. For this purpose, we moved from Borsa Palace to provide our stockbroking services in a different building. We plan to start restoration and renovation works as soon as possible. There is no transfer of our building to any institution. After the renovation, the representation, hosting and activities of the İzmir Commodity Exchange will continue to be held in our building. The sections to be determined will be used in different functions and projects of our Exchange, including our gastronomy project. In addition, our historical Stock Exchange Palace will be renewed and will be made more open to the use of the people of Izmir by hosting social, cultural and educational activities.” Kestelli also thanked the Governor of İzmir, Yavuz Selim Köşger, for all the support he has given and will give to the Stock Exchange Palace, whose restoration project was completed with the İzmir Governorship Investment Monitoring and Coordination Presidency (YIKOB).
