Response to Erdogan from Izmir Metropolitan Municipality

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality responded to the criticisms made by AKP President Erdogan during his visit to Izmir with a written statement. The statement said, “We proudly state that İzmir is the leader of Turkey with the number and capacity of wastewater treatment plants today.” The statement also reminded the 'General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works'.

The written statement from the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is as follows;

It has become necessary for the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality to make a statement regarding the statements made by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the rally held within the scope of the Izmir program.

Within the framework of our responsibility to inform the public, we must first state that the annual amount of 59 million cubic meters of water promised by the aforementioned DSI from Gördes Dam has never been reached since 2011, and for some years no water has been provided. It has recently been determined that Gördes, whose water level has not risen for years due to a major manufacturing defect, is also a leak in tunnel construction. As of today, the active occupancy rate of the dam is 1,58 percent. According to the data of 2020, the portion of İzmir's total drinking water need met by Gördes Dam is only 12 percent.

However, İZSU General Directorate has been fulfilling its own commitments for years and regularly pays the cost of this investment to DSI with interest.

Moreover, since its establishment in 1954, the General Directorate of DSI has to make investments to meet the drinking water needs of cities with a population of over 100 thousand, as required by law. Tahtalı Dam, which is the lifeblood of İzmir today, was also brought to our city by DSI in 1997. This price is also paid to DSI.

The General Directorate of İZSU and the people of İzmir do not have a dietary debt to institutions and individuals for any project and investment paid by the citizens of the city.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, from past to present, carries out the task of cleaning and protecting the bay, which it considers as one of the most important riches of the city, by taking initiative, regardless of which institution is responsible.

We should proudly state that today İzmir is the leader of Turkey in terms of the number and capacity of wastewater treatment plants. A total of 23 wastewater treatment plants, 68 of which carry out advanced biological treatment at European standards, are operated by the General Directorate of İZSU.

In addition, 97% of İzmir's wastewater is treated.

Thanks to these investments, the mucilage problem in the Marmara Sea and the straits has not been experienced in the Izmir Bay.
It is significant in terms of showing the point reached in the field of infrastructure that a disaster similar to the one in 2 did not occur in our city, which received one of the biggest precipitations in its history on the night of February 2021, 1995, although almost all the streams overflowed.

There are many cities in Turkey that do not separate sewage and rainwater, most of which are managed by municipalities belonging to the ruling party. However, İzmir is not one of them. As of today, more than 700 km of separation lines have been taken into operation, and the construction of 122 km has begun.

Finally, another detail that we should mention is the fact that the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality invested a total of 2019 billion liras in the city with İZSU and ESHOT in the period covering 2020, 2021 and 9.8, while the total investments of the central administration in İzmir remained at 5.92 billion liras in the same period. .

We present it to the attention of all our people, especially dear people of Izmir, with our respect.
