Daimler and its major Chinese shareholder Geely are determined to launch the Chinese-made Smart passenger car next year. Hubertus Troska, Daimler's head for China, announced in an online edit on Thursday (November 25th) that the initiative is progressing very well.

A description of the new Smart car in the context of converting a tiny vehicle into an SUV was presented in September in the city of Munich. On the other hand, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group and Mercedes-Benz have established a joint venture for the production of Smart vehicles.

Meanwhile, Troska noted that Daimler is suffering from a shortage of electronic components and semiconductors in China as well as in Germany. By contrast, China is already the most important market for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. In fact, about 35 percent of the total global version of the aforementioned brand is drawn by this market. Therefore, as Troska points out, the demand here is very high; because after the corona epidemic, China was the country that came to its senses earlier than all the countries of the world.

The automotive group opened a new technical center in the Beijing region last month. Here, more than a thousand engineers and experts work, among other things, on the digitalization of vehicles and co-driver systems.
